Keeping sheet/doona on C T mattress.

We have a CT with a bed which we climb up to from the foot/bottom and on which we use sheets and doona rather than sleeping bags. After several winter trips away during which I had trouble with the top sheet pulling out, after hubby has stretched full length and, gradually, the whole kaboodle trying to slither off the bed. My solution to this was to sew a pocket along the bottom width of the sheet.

Fold the sheet under about 30-45 cm (depending on length of sheet and how far up the mattress you like to have the top end,) then about 4-8 cm out from the side, sew a line from the bottom edge of the sheet to the fold line, on both sides of mattress.

Don't make it too tight as tall folks will end up whinging about sleeping in straight jackets. Besides ending the ritual roll-over that ends up with one person cocooned in all the blankets and one with none, this modification will also make it easier to make the bed in the morning. The designated bed-maker (last one out) kneels at pillow end and pulls the sheet up without ending up with the kaboodle in his lap.
OzeSheila.

I have just told the one who drives our sewing machine about your idea.

We like it, and if I can be a good boy and get some of her work done, so she has a spare couple of min we might end up with something similar.

Thanks for the tip Sheila. I'll copy anything off anyone if I think it will make my life easier

No problem Duncs, glad to be of help. Mine was a rough job to start with, a prototype you might say, but have refined it a bit since, as it worked so well.

Hi,
I solved a similar bedding problem in our campa except I have curved, hemmed & threaded with elastic, the bottom end (only) of the top sheets as in 'fitted' sheets.
Still having trouble with the doona but before our next trip, will sew on flaps to both sides and bottom of cover for more 'tuck-in' and less bulk.

I'm only guessing, but could the sheet pulling out be caused by lack of friction between the mattress and the timber base it sits on?
Most mattresses sit on a material base, or slats which would both cause friction to prevent the sheet pulling out.
In our CT, the timber is smooth ply, and I was contemplating pfixing a layer of thin carpet (or strips) on top to stop the mattress sliding around.
We haven't used the CT yet, so don't know if the smooth ply causes the problem.
Cheers

I wish I could get lost more often. At least it would mean I've gone somewhere different.
