I am considering buying a Jeep Commander 3 litre turbo diesel (auto) and will be towing a 870kg (dry weight) camper trailer. Can anyone give me some
feedback on whether they know how these cars perform off road.
How do they perform in dusty conditions?
I've already researched fuel consumption and they aren't too bad at 10.5 litres per 100km and pulling about 14 litres per 100km.
Any
feedback will be appreciated.
Thanks to the
feedback on the Pioneer C/T. I've ordered the Pioneer Onyx. Now just need a good car to pull it. I'm currently driving a 2000 Pajero exceed.

Gooday,
Have a June 2006 Commander CRD, done 29,000 KM a good deal towing 21 Ft caravan, approx 3000 KG all up, best Jepp we have had out of 4 new ones since 1999. Had 2.7CRD before this, great vehicle, V6 has more Grunt and next to No Lag on take off. Get 16-17 Litres per 100 Km towing Caravan at 85km Per hr, haven't done highway run to
check, get 15-16 L per 100 around city.
Great to drive great room in cabin, easy entry & exit much easier than a "BRUISER", comfortable size to park, haven't been off road as such yet, great on gravel.
Took the 2.7 from Bne to
Laverton accross Donoghue & Plenty in 2005 towing caravan, not a worry.
Any other questions my spacemail is on profile.
Make sure you have a decent
test drive, not just around
the block.
Cheers boroma604.

Have a 2005 Grand Cherokee Laredo 3.0 CRD with 70,000km on the clock now - same engine and running gear as the Commander. Tow an Aussie Swag CT (1500kg loaded, 120kg on the ball) and a Supreme Getaway 15' Off Road caravan (2000kg loaded & 220kg on the ball). Towing one or the other for 17,000km with no problems. Best tow vehicle I've had - compared to my previous '95 Discovery 300Tdi and 2002 4.2 GU Patrol. Flattens hills with either behind.
Off Road is no issue since lifted about 60mm and easily outperforms the other previous vehicles. I live near
Canberra and do lots of low-range high country trips.
First auto I've had (and also first Jeep) and would find it hard to go back to manual - only issue is poor stall recovery ability, but I can live with that.
Average fuel consumption for the 70,000km is 12.2 L/100 km and generally get about 11.5 with the CT behind and in the 14's with the caravan - maintaining the posted speed limits at all times if safe.
In my view a very underated vehicle.
Cheers
