Been reading a lot of info on these forums on aftermarket rims on the current shape Prado. I do not want to grind my brake callipers while the vechile is under warranty just so I can fit 16 rims. I am happy to pay the 'premium' for 17 inch offroad tyres over the 16" option. I'm sure others have been thru this..... where can I find a 17" steel rim for a reasonable price. I have found a set of black Sunraysia type in 17x8 35P which are perfect for what I want but a lot dearer than 16". I need to fit 265/70 17R mudders to get me the same rolling diametre as my road wheels (just to make you offroads cringe 22x9.5 - 305/40/22R). I am manager of Tassie Devil Lures and much of my driving is on the black stuff delivering product etc. But when we go offroad we really do go offroad..... thats how we get to the good fishing spots, with nobody around for days. Love the look of the Kumho KL71... anybody got a set of these???? Have been recommended th Cooper ST also. Any info appreciated.

It depends on what you consider to be a reasonable price.

I purchased 17x8inch steel rims by King Wheels (from Tyrepower) cost $150 each. They have a P30 offset and no need to grind anything. Come in black, white & chrome (i think) cheers A

I have Sunraysia's which were $115 (17x8). Black was going to be about $15 dearer. I found somewhere else that could do them cheaper ($105 for white I think) but their price for the tyres I wanted were dearer so I went with the "dear wheels/cheaper" tyres because I have historically bought my tyres from that place and they worked hard to get me them at the same overall price. Ended up throwing in some anti-theft locknuts too so I was happy.

Since you're running non-std road wheels/tyres you're probably aware that a 265/70 isn't std either (slightly bigger) and the ramifications associated (legality depending on what state your in, insurance, speddo errors), however if you want a LT construction tyre, your pretty much out of luck for 265/65's as std. Pro Comp make one I think, but it's very expensive and there might be one other by some unknown brand. check ww.pradopoint.com for lots of discussion regarding Prado tyres.

cheers, Nige

Thanks Nige - In Tassie regulations on aftermarket wheels are reasonably relaxed. You can increase tyre width by 50mm, up tp 75mm on some 4WD's. Only other thing mentioned, and I think it is only a recommendation not law, is that load rating of new tyre must be equal or greater than standard. I need 265/70 to get the rolling diameter, 803mm, so my spare will match my current wheels. Kumho KL71 and Cooper STT have a 265/70 17R so they are available. My insurance is good too, requiring only that state requirements are met.

Since late 2006, the base model Prados are coming with 17x7.5 steel wheels. Maybe you can pick up a set from a dealer or a tyre place that does work for a dealer?

Tyres: you may want to consider the Goodyear MTRs - not a true muddie, but pretty close to it and they come in the 265/70R17.

Cheers Phil - I was not aware that the Standard model had moved up to 17x7.5, I had thought about that option but the original rim was to narrow for a decent tyre.

The GX (TD and petrol) is the model with the 7.5 inch wide steel wheels.
The "standard" model still has the older smaller, skinny wheels according to their website.
GXL and VX have mags.

Tas Devil,

I have a 120 Prado and as a second set of "play" wheels/tyres I've got CSA 17"x 8" P30. Fitted with MTZ 276/70/17.
I paid $110 each for the rims. I'm pretty sure you should be able to pick up CSA wheels in any state for around the same price.
The MTZs are great off road and handle surprisingly well on road for a muddy, just a bit of steering vagueness <100kmh and more noisy.

I have 3 sets for my Prado.
I have the original alloys with the dunlops for around town.
I originally put 90 series steel rims with MTR's for my first desert crossing but I ended up buying the Pilbara 17x7.5 steel rim and put 265/70x17 MTR's on them for my last desert trip. These are a great tyre.
My Prado is for sale so I won't need the rims and tyres. They have done about 7000km. You are welcome to make me an offer but the cost of the rims and tyres plus freight to tassie might make it too expensive.

You can usually pick up the Pilbara rims on Ebay for between 100 and 120 dollars each.
