There are various water treatments you can use , a few are available at Whitworths Marine. www.whitworths.com.au
I have used simple stainless tank conditioners etc however I'm not sure of the cleaning power, more designed for removing smells etc.
If the tank needs a lot of cleaning for rust or other deposits not sure about it being suitable for drinking..?

Miltons baby bottle wash is the better cleaner for drinking water tanks, as it's a food grade cleaner, or beer fermenter cleaner, rince thoughly if using both BUT especially the Meta something arather sulphate!!(FERMENTER CLEANER)

I looked at this today,( Miltons bottle wash) It says you can't put it on base metals.
Cheers Steve.

Metabisulphate is the stuff your thinking of Baz , tis a fancy dancy name for a sterilizing agent derived in some instances from
orange peel ,

G'day Steve
I also have had to clean out our 60 lt stainless steel tank. I used the same salts that beer lines are cleaned with.
Called 'Cellerman Beerline Cleaner'.....Active Constituent 30-60% w/w Alkaline Salts. I've used this twice in five tears and so far have been more than happy. I could see the results because I use clear plastic lines. They were quite a dark brown on the inside and as the product took effect, I Left it overnight then I pushed fresh water through and the 'gunk just peeled off the lines. I did this twice over 2 days and finished with perfectly clear 'as new' pipes.I can only quess the inside of the tank was also clean (obviously you cant get into the tank) But I had lovely sweet water again and no 'floaties' coming thru.
Hope this will help
regards Jeff.
PS I bought the product from a
Home Brewing
Shop.
