Yes well up here in Forbes we don't have em, must be all in Melbourne where there is more buldust to attract em.

On a more serious note, I have been told by an agronomist that the Dung Beetles don't breed in very dry weather so their population has reduced and they aren't breaking up all the cow pats. So the flies are having a great time.

You see, that is main reason, why we all should eat kangaroo meat. If you never taste it, you can buy it these days in Woolworth or Coles marinated with spices is very very nice, lot better taste than beef. And burgers from mince? YUMMMMMM

I can't get past the fact that I used to feed my dogs Kangaroo mince from the pet shop, so i still think of it as pet food not a delicacy.
Probably my loss but as i was chewing a kangaro steak i would still be smelling dog food in my head.

Actually worst place I have been regarding flies is Snow River national park. There are now cows there at all, but lots of roos. And flies was absolutely unbearable – it was difficult to breath (forget about eat!!!) outside fly-screen, and we was incredibly lucky to have one.

I had heard this many times before...the snowys are a beautiful place in the off season but the flies can carry you away.

Then again you have Victoria just to the south and Canberra nearby, again a lot of attractants there......LOL

Dont know why any fly would be bothered going to Canberra. All the pollies are somewhere else trying to save their own back slides. Maybe they are all in Melbourne today. I cant work out why any self respecting fly would want to go to Melbourne at any time. except for the obvious attractant of a " Pat Full " of pollies.

Hi KSV,
The success story (well, partial success) in the West was the introduction of the dung beetle about 30 years ago, which has had a noticeable impact on flies. A latency in breeding usually meant that the flies started breeding in spring, whereas the beetles were not active till late spring or early summer, so spring meant lots of flies, but summer was a lot more pleasant.
But recent Govt policy, I understand, has meant a reduction in dung beetles. Apparently, they are not all that self-sustaining, and require "topping-up" with an ongoing breeding program. Funds for this program has been cut in recent years.
