Gearbox & Transfer case Overhaul $$$$

Submitted: Sunday, Dec 02, 2007 at 13:00

WA Joe

Hi,
Has anyone had a gearbox and transfer case overhauled for a 5 speed HJ60 or similar Toyota in the last 12 months or so and how much did it cost. I'm looking at a second hand HJ60 and the transfer is noisy in 4WD. I would do both boxes at the same time. So would like to know what I might be up for in the future.

Thanks everyone,
Joe.

Hi Doug,

Realise that WA is opposed to Qld geographically, but WAS quoted $2500 plus $400.00 exchange return for a fully reconed box & transfer case into Darwin, again - on the other side of Australia.

Basically including freight component seems cheaper than your repair in the Isa.

2 years ago it cost me $3,500 in Adelaide on a HJ61 ie Turbo Diesel should be the same Box and Transfer case as the 60 series. Price depends on how many cogs and syncro gears they change the change. Included a heavy duty clutch as well.

I had a H55f transmission and t/cse done. It was about $3000+ clutch kit$450 ,rear main$ 80 machine flywheel $55.

If you do the clutch and rear main seal its free labour, well sort of : )

I would also ask if the price guarantees a new 1st gear synchro and main shaft.
If they put a used one in they save $450 but rarely pass the saving on.

WA Joe,
why don't you try the mob in Bridgetown that do the engine conversions to the V8 Diesel.

They might have some laying around.

If not try a wrecker as they usually give 3mths guarantee on them.

Hope it helps.

If you do buy it & fix the box & tranny case make sure you put a by- pass hose in ! Hate to say it but by the time you do all this it will be worth more than the vehicle. I have a 60 Series T/ Diesel with 250,000k's & still on the origonal box, but that hose is manditory if you want longlivity.
