Cobb Cooker

Submitted: Monday, Dec 03, 2007 at 18:30

zedd

Hi, I have had a Cobb for about 6 months and have used it at home and camping. Think it is great. Have cooked roast chickens, beef, lamb and casseroles. Even tried some puddings and muffins. finally got the vegies down pat too.

I want to have a go at cooking a ham. Anyone got any suggestions on how to do this?

Also has anyone used the friying dish? Is it worth buying?

I haven't done this on our Cobb - but it should be quite a simple process - if you are using a leg ham - remove the skin - score the fat in a diamond shape - brush with your marinade/coating - (I have used a jar or tin of crushed pineapple mixed with brown sugar and some marmalade (to make it all sticky) - takes about 1 hour (depending on size of ham) in the normal oven - remember you really only need to heat it through and have the marinade flavour get into the meat.
You can also use maple syrup with pineapple jam or just about anything you like - it looks nice with glace cherries poked into the diamond pattern.
Hope this helps - wish I was coming to your house for dinner - I can taste it now.

Try a piece of pickled pork roasted in the Cobb, it just tastes like hot ham. We often do one when camping with friends and at Xmas when we camp in an unpowered caravan camp site.

Depends on the size of the piece of meat . Usually only around 1hr and 1/2 with veggies around the moat and about 7 maybe 8 heatbeads cooking for 4 maybe 6. I put it on the stainless steel rack to stop the bottom burning but then I put all my roasts on them now. When camping I usually dont cook to a time frame, when it is ready it is time to eat.

Thanks Robyn,
Will have to give it a try and I might also try your suggestion re a rack.

Mine is a couple of years old and did not come with any rack, so will use one of those low ones.
