Camping New England Hwy

Submitted: Monday, Dec 03, 2007 at 20:50

Kiwi & "Mahindra"

Probably going up the New England around Chrissy to Toowoomba from Nowra....WHERE THE BEST FIRST CAMPING NIGHT?? We will probably have a big drive the first day, leave around 4am, Im assuming from my nasty memory that Armidale is about 8hrs from here....so that would put us at lunch time....so maybe cmaping around Glen Innes....

Looked at a few of the National parks around there.....got an other ideas??

Most of the decent camping spots between Armidale & Glen Innes are 40 odd k's East or West of the hwy......If you have a camper or van, many ppl take advantage of a free site in Guyra over looking the "Mother of ducks lagoon" .....toilets only & 2 mins walk to the club & 2 mins the other way to the shops....

We use this regularly, usually we're by ourselves. The toilets are clean and well looked after but are locked up overnight, opened at 7am if memory serves me right. We live just outside Toowoomba and find that drive just about right for us.

Yep, that's where we live, you must be one of the very few who've heard of the place. Having said that if you haven't been here for a while you won't recognise the place, it's been discovered.
Might see you when you get here, we're on the corner of Meringandan Rd and Peters Rd next to the phone exchange.

Geoff,

My grandparents used to live in Highfields on Highfield Road. My grandfather built the big old house on "Whispering Pines". When they sold the house and land it was sub divided, from memory that was in the early 90's.
We spent a fair bit of time in Meringandan visiting family friends, but I haven't been there for about 20 years.

Morning Laura,

I'm in Tamworth so you could always stay overnite here at my place - q/s bed for you and Nathan and spare mattresses for the kids. And Toowoomba is about 6 hours up the Newell H'way from here via Gunnedah and Moree - takes all the nasty hills of the New England out of the equation. I drive to Milmerran that way when I go up to shoot clay targets - easier on the 4x4 with no hills to tow the CT up so better fuel economy.
Any idea when you are coming through - I'll at least try to arrange a cuppa.

Cheers

Rover Park near Tenterfield, it's a good long days drive from Sydney.

Nundle State Forest is a great spot for camping and a good first stop, or Nundle campground itself, it's just this side of Tamworth, turn off at Wallabadah.

G'day Laura
Just an addition to my post. If you go through Tenterfield, there are a few things to see, The home of the 'Tenterfield Saddler' and just around the corner a magnificent big Cork tree.

Leaving the town to the North- the Mount Lindesay Road is an interesting (dirt) road- with a bit of history on the bushranger Captain Thunderbolt. Just off the road is Bald Rock- well worth a look.

Laura,

9k's north of Glen Innes there is an overnight rest stop on left (as you are nth bound) it is a good way off the road and quiet enough. Creek at rest stop but no facilities other than a dirty toilet so dig a hole or go in Glen Innes before you get to the o/nighter.

On top of Moonbi hill (just nth of Tamworth) there is another rest stop with fab views over the Peel valley towards Tamworth. Again no facilities but a nice stop nonetheless.

Safe travels.
Trevor.
