Wonder if anyone has been able to power up the new Ibis a/c from a genny? and if so what type and how big?
My Honda EU20i ran my previous Aircommand rooftop unit but drops out on overload with the new unit!
Been looking at the Yamaha 24i and 28i but cannot get confirmation it will handle the Ibis.without taking van to actually try it! which is a real pain to do!

Hi haza

Were are you ? If in Brisbane you can test one of ours. The container will be here in Jan 2008 but the prototype is available for testing. 2.4 kva with 2.6 kva peak.

Regards

Derek.

I have a Honda 2.0 and at the same load (my Air command slit system) they sound the same. If I run the a/c and my 30A smart charger the Honda trips but the new 2.6 unit increases revs slightly and noise goes up but only a bit. I don't have a db meter so can't say exactly but the specs are 60 - 65 db which I think is similar to the Honda. They also have 'Smart throttle' for lowering the noise.

Thanks for the offer Derek but I'm in Perth!
Its so bloody annoying as the new Ibis has exactly the same specs as the old unit but no way will it run with my Honda!

George
Its 3.2KW exactly the same as the Wren (old model) and maximum locked rotor current is 20A again the same as the Wren!
Silly thing is the run current is slightly less at 5.2A compared to 6.2A.
very strange.
Someone on the msn caravan forum contacted Aircommand and they said they cannot recommend any generator to run the Ibis! but a minimum of 3.0KVA would be required ?
I'm just trying to find out if anyone has succeeded.

Hi brian, I'm out your way tomorrow morning, around 8-8:30 but from your info I don't think a 2.4 yamaha will run your Ibis. However I would be happy to try it. Contact me on 0418 910 793 and let me know

mate my next door neighbour got a new van with Ibis and his Honda 20i would not run and tried Kipor 2600 and did not even attempt to start like Honda did. took it back to the dealer as dealer guaranteed Ibis would power from Honda 20i and had Domestic fitted.

Bigdog
Look forward to see how it goes.
I quite like the look of the 2.8 yammy and physical size- wise very similar to the Honda.

Gooday,
Go to caravanforum (not CARAVANERS) about the 11th topic down has a truck load of info on your problem, including advice from Air Command Head Honcho.
If I knew how to put the link on here I would but can get in enough notts without trying.
You will find they now need a Minimum 3kva.
Cheers, Boroma604.

Hi Hazo
I have a Ibis A/C in my Van and a 30 amp smart charger,my EU20i Honda runs them happily with no problem , it does't like running the Hot Water unit it draws a line at that. You might need to get the output on the Honda checked out.

Well I can now confirm my Ibis will not run with a Yamaha 2.4i!

George was good enough to bring his round this morning to try. It attempted to start but almost stalled the yammy! then something clicks, in the Ibis, and it shuts down!
My only option now is to try a 2.8i or wait for Bigdog to try his when his arrives.
Thanks for all the help.

As a follow up,I have been in touch with Yamaha australia, and their state manager rang me to arrange a home demo of the 2.8i model.
Will be interesting to see if that does the job.

With the Honda are you trying the a/c with the smart throttle on because the load can be too quick for the revs to pick to match the load try with it off if you haven't already.

Didnt try it with the eco throttle on at all as I knew the load would be fairly heavy.
Disconnected everything else in van so only the a/c was drawing power.

Hazo is the Ibis a/c better than a heron 2.2 or just a more powerful unit?

Cannot really answer that one! I've had just about every combination of caravan type a/c and they are all noisy! compared to domestic systems.(some worse than others)
And are all "old" technology (non inverter systems)
I was going to have a domestic unit fitted in this new van but the manufacturer refused to do it!
In hind sight I should have ordered it without any and done a split install myself.
Some of the small inverter systems are said to be able to run happily off a 1.0kva genny!

hazo,
You probably already tried this: I use a Honda 20i to drive my Aircommand. I turn the fan on first then 1 minute later turn the A/C onto cool, I was told this by Aircommand, it reduces the high starting current load on the 20i.

I tried lifting the Yamaha 24i in a camping shop this morning its b... heavy.

The Ibis does not really give you that option, the fan comes on first anyway and runs fine, then after a short delay the compressor tries to start, it clicks a few times then shuts down!
Spoke to Yamaha again to-day and they said they did a trial with three Ibis equiped vans (all brand new) and two ran perfectly on a 2.4i, but the third would not start on a 2.4i,a 2.8i and finally started on a 3.0 kva model (but only just!)
Mine is obviously one of the latter!
I've sent an e-mail to Aircommand to day, exp[pressing my displeasure! will see if I get a reply!

Have had a call from my dealer in Perth to day, they have been in contact with Aircommand who have admitted that there is a problem with a "small" percentage of Ibis a/cs running from a Yamaha 2.4 genny.

They are currently working on a solution (maybe a recall to fit a soft starter) to the affected units.

Again this info came from my dealer and not Aircommand!

I suggest anyone having problems to contact their dealer and Aircommand so that, pressure can be put on the manufacturer, and it can be rectified.

Due to the xmas holidays I have been advised to contact them straight after the xmas break and it will be put right.

Being the eternal cynic, mainly with caravan dealers, it will remain to be seen if they are true to their word!

hazo,
Its a pity you cannot run the A/c on a Honda 20i, I think it is reasonably heavy for a fit 65 year old to lift in and out of a 4wd. I hope I can still do the lift when I am 70.

Maybe you should mount the Yamaha on the A Frame or change your A/C to a model that can run on the 20i, negotiate with Aircommand it may mean a bit extra cash but at least you will be able to lift the Honda. How much is not getting a bad back worth..
