80 series lift

Hi all,

I have a 92 80 series turbo diesel and have just dragged my towbar around the high plains. I think I need to lift it a bit.

I have standard suspension which I think has sagged a bit, 175000 kms, but old man emu shockers. A basic lift of 1 or 2 inches would be fine, I don't want to do a lot, probably just recover what I've lost and add a bit.

I ran into a guy with a 100 series, a mechanic. He tells me that he has lifted 2 80s and his 100 by just putting new springs into them, 2 inch lift, same shockers, he has standard shockers. He's done nothing more than that. He suggested Kings Springs for a 2 inch higher spring.

I'm wondering is this is all that is needed. Can anyone help me with some more info on a small lift? I believe there's all sorts of opinions on it but I don't know anything about it, and I'm sure anyone with something to sell will tell me I need to spend up big to do it, I'm not interested in that.

Anyone able to offer suggestions?

Worked for me Peter - used springs from TJM and had to get new shocks as only had originals when I did it. I know the OME shocks cover a 2 inch lift though.

I also put a pair of Polyairs in the back to level up when the load of my CT got heavy (and as the springs got older & sagged a bit) - springs & shocks lasted 200,000 km no worries.

I suspect any brand recommended by someone who has used them would be fine

Polyairs on my recently traded 120 Prado worked a treat. With varying loads on different trips they have proven flexable and durable.Cost not that different to another set of springs from memory.

Hi Peter,

We are in the process of doing some major upgrades to our 98 model 100 series. Part of this is we just put as new 2" lift kit with new OME suspension (Springs & Shocks).

The car still had it's original suspension under it, had done 225000 k's, and with the new 2" suspension, it actually gave me 65mm lift at the front and an amazing 100mm at the back. Total cost was $1800 but I have to be honest and say well worth it. it is a totally different 4b to drive.

I could have had new springs and shocks put in by Pedders for around $1200 and got the same lift, however as I said we are doing a lot of work on the car in preparation for a trip starting in March, and I was getting a heap of other work done by ARB so got it all done there at once.

plenty of opinions here so heres mine....

King Springs are brilliant, well, were in our 80 series before we sold her.....

we had supposedly a 2'' in the front and 3'' in the rear with Ultima Big Bore Shocks.....

they rode so well over the corrigation on our desert trip last year that we told the local suspension guy, (didnt do it for us) to recommend them to other 80 series....he wouldnt have thought they would be good enough.

We do have a photo of our 80 at Crudimurka with the back end sagging like you wouldnt believe but she was loaded in the roof and the back, full of LPG, Petrol and Jerrys as well......not a good photo to show how good the above works but it didnt really seem that bad......!!

you can just put in springs with the OME shocks it should be fine.
Another option is EFS. Good product with a good price.
Toyota shocks are fine with after market springs as long as you don't go to a HD spring. Once you have a HD spring I find the shocks don't quite have enough dampening.

Old man emu are hard to beat because they are a matched setup and have the longest shocks of all the aftermarket kits without going custom...so better articulation....ebay have heaps of springs you can try, they are real cheap and easy to swap in....shocks should be bought new thou.
