Which Locker

Hi Everyone

I have had ARB air lockers before on my 100 series and found them to be great. My dilemma is I have to make a decision for my HJ60 Cruiser as to which locker to use. Can anyone give me feedback on Detroit and Lock-Right Lockers please? Looking to save some hard earned on this project.

Many Thanks

Dont start you two!! Its a VERY specific question on Detroits or Lockrights and he said he is after the BIGGEST advantage...cost.

Oh and he probably wants to be able to grip and steer, no air leaks, cracked lines leaking seals, vulnerable electrics, no lessons on how to operate (wife in emergency) always available...etc etc etc

Im sure he has searched the forum and found all the pro and cons and just wanted specifics to confirm his correct choice hahahahahhahahahahahhahahahahahhahahahahhahahahahahhaha

Ducking for cover now!

Matt, Sorry I have had trouble replying. Thanks, I have researched it fairly well but I was looking for some practical back up as you said. Thanks. As I said the Arb were great for me but there are always other options.

Thanks once again

Truckie thats like saying the V6 Supercar 'pros' use Holinger 6 speeds so we should use them too.

Love to see someone clutchshift a non syncromesh gearbox on the roads because the 'pros' use them.

Big difference to touring and competition.

Im happy with my choice as im sure you are...

I have had the Detroit NO-SPIN Auto lockers in both diffs for 3 years, and had a rear in the Rocky back in the 90s.I wouldn't be bothered with Air lockers, and if you have any doubts about steering ask Jeff H ...Member, he's seen mine in action.

LOL....people are welcome to what ever they want to put in vehicles Matt.. Would be a dull old world if we all liked the same thing.
At times air lockers are better as you go as far as you can with diffs open and when stuck use lockers to get you out. With detroits when you get stuck it is oh bleep e, buggar, and a few other choice words and out with the shovel or winch.
Mind you I have found if you wait around enough there is that much hot air waffling around the bloody car should float out.....grin

If you believe the weather gurus the low in the gulf is supposed to be off the south-east corner of Qld by next Tuesday. Hard to believe it can move this fast. Any good luck with it.

Come down out the fog mate, that low in South Qld is not the one in the Gulf, that's a different one and is expected to turn into a Cyclone .

Hello,

To Doug and Oldsquizzy,

I think you may have sold me on the detroits, I have always liked the fact that they are so strong and reliable. Just one question. I noticed in one of the articles posted by Doug that it suggests there is some effect on the vehicle handling with a rear manual locker. Any negatives associated with this that you have noticed?

Thanks,
Dave

99% of your driving you won't know it's there, you will learn to slightly modify your driving, i.e when doing U turns do it normal without applying to much power, that allows the locker to unlock , soon as your vehicle straightens up it will silently lock again , very rarely when starting off from a set of lights it might give a kick, why this happens is maybe when you rolled to a stop you might have turned slightly causing it to unlock , when you take off it will snap back in , scares the crap out of you when not expecting it but it does not cause problems, Detroit have been in the game for over 50 years and they are STRONG.The other plus is the locker is working 100% of the time, if you hit a slippery patch with an air locker your already in the poo before you can activate the switch, with an Auto locker it's already done the job .
Now the choice is yours . make it wisely.

Hi Doug T

Mate I am in Brisbane and follow the weather pretty closely.
Cyclone Helen emanated from west of Darwin or thereabouts. There was another low already in the gulf last Tuesday waiting to develop which was predicted to cross the cape and venture down our way by Tuesday. If you follow this thread it will take you to B.O.M. which is the low I was talking about but it looks set to fizzle out.

Truckster will put a stake through my heart for this comment i am about to make.

I am not sure if i would bother with air lockers again with any other 4x4's i buy.

I have air lockers front and rear in my bus at the moment and they work great, except for little things like o'ring popping out of compressor tank and stopping the air lockers when i really needed them.
Air lines have a little leak sometimes and the lockers cant decide if they are in or out and thats a pain.

The auto lockers are just plain good all the time because they just do what they are sposed to do.

In a Patrol i had a while ago i had a front air locker and that was a pain sometimes.

Yeah, i would go back to Lockrite again. For sure.
