turbo temperature

Can anyone tell us, how hot should the turbo temp be running at?

We have a GQ patrol with a denco turbo and as an example it's running at 320 degrees at 8psi boost- that's at 90 kph without towing.

I have the EGT gauge located aft of the turbo.
Normal highway cruising it sits about 350. On a long gradual uphill I can induce it to 400. And a longish steep hill (Catherine Hill southbound) it can peak out at a tad under 500.
Similar setup to you- Turbo Dynamics (now Denco??)

My GQ used to run up to 550 which to me is the limit, others say 600+ is ok, but depends on where your gauge is in the system, can make a 100 degree+ difference.

My Navara runs at 590 after turbo, on a dyno under load,
Pretty warm eh!

Dunno what it does on a real hard pull up hill, but then again thats what gears are for, !.

On our last Desert trip, loaded up towing a camper, hard going in in bulldust, and sand, and the turbo whistling like hell, I would hate to think what temp she got to.
But I will put it to you this way, I kept boiling the 2nd battery.

Cheers MAte

Good subject on this on the 4WD monthly forum Here is excerpt from one thread from a guy who builds EGT kits

I have my probe fitted post turbo on a 3.0td Patrol as close as i could get it to the flange. The temps I'm seeing are between 250C and 500C. I have spoken to ATX turbo about these temps and have been told that up to 550C is acceptable but not to be exceeded for great lengths of time. If the probe was fitted pre turbo, the temps would increase by around 200C. Fitting the probe pre turbo on the 3.0td would be a P.I.T.A. The thermocouple accuracy I can't recall the figures but my setup measures ambient temp... and that was out of the box. The gauge does have an offset facility to set the accuracy of the reading.

Gday
There are many inputs into the equasion as to whats safe...if you run an efficient intercooler, the temperature of incoming air is alot less,(60 degrees on boost) so theoretically, the exhaust temp can be higher before it effects the piston as much as if you didnt run an intercooler, and inlet temperature was 200 degrees celcius.
The 550 post turbo may equate to 750 pre, or it may be more if the turbo is water cooled, or less if it is larger than the factory setup...there are just so many vaiables...ive heard 600 pre turbo, and will stick to that until i get my intercooler plumbed up.

Hi thecastles

When we put our EGT gauge on, the best info i could find anywhere came from Ian's Thermoguard web site.

http://www.thermoguard.com.au/FAQ.pdf

He is a member here, and i didn't know he marketed gauges until after ours was fitted.
