After market trip computer

Submitted: Thursday, Jan 03, 2008 at 15:35

Rod, Sydney

Hi. This question has been asked a few times over the past few years.

I am very interested in a trip computer that can give instant and average fuel readings for my Landcruiser 100 4.2 TD. The ScanGuageII would be the answer but does not work with my vehicle.

Any ideas?

I have the scangaugeII and yes, it's excellent. Only vehicles sold in the US market have the OBD2 plug required to run it.

The OBDI and II connectors are a world standard, not restricted to US cars at all.

I run the Scanguage on my Jackaroo, it's a fantastic piece of kit.

All vehicles built after 1996 (I think) have the OBD2 plug. It's an industry standard.

There should be another OBD2 reader doohicky that will do the job.

I believe Lucy has a very small "plug".

Just a rumour I heard.

The OBD II port's physical connector is called the Data Link Connector (DLC). It is a 16-pin plug that's usually located under the dashboard near the steering wheel. (The standard specifies that the connector must be within three feet of the driver.)

Thanx Sir Kovac! This plug is located indeed under the dash beside the steering wheel and it the diagnistics plug that Nissan use to find out what went PHUT! I have a power pickup from one of the pins and Nissan would disconnect it every time it went on for service. When I chipped them about it, they said that its not a "power" source, just a 12v source for their diagnostics machine.

I rerouted the lead somewhere else after that didn't want to fry the cables - I think it was to supply the UHF.

Hi. This is the response from Wooders - still no joy for the ScanGaugeII in a 100-series.

"Unfortunately the Landcruiser (in our testing) wasn't compliant until the 200-series.

"If you are ever in the Thornleigh area, you'd be most welcome to try the test unit, however I would be surprised given our previous success with the 100-series."

Conclusion ... there does not appear to be a sensible aftermarket trip computer on the market for the 100-series.

Hi Mike.

The 100-series imported to the USA will work but the 4.2TD I own here in Australia is not sold in the USA. Maybe Australia's vehicles came off a different production line - Toyota has not standardised on the ODBII interface across its range. (Note that the Diesel LC200 is not sold in the USA today).

Cheers
