Has anyone else done the original "inside" track, recently? If so, can they post some
trek notes
for it, please?

Not recently. Drove to Birdsville via
Walkers Crossing
and
Inside Track
about 2005 in standard 2.7 Prado with 2" lift. Track start is not easy to find without GPS. (old Pink Roadhouse lid on ground - without label) Had a couple of dsiversions due to Goyder area in south being a bit wet. Travelled off track for several Kms due to very slippery/boggy track conditions. Trip took a day including one bogging. Delightful alternative.
Cheers
Chris

Time
replied: Drove the
Inside track
from South to Birdsville and outside track down to turn off to
Walkers Crossing
and onto Innaminka in September 2007.
Inside track
was easy, a bit of sand in a few place but at that time of the year not a problem. The turn off is just past (100 mtrs) the solar powered Dark Green shed that houses flushing loos. An easy days run from Mungeranie.
Track to Innaminka is sign posted, the first 30 - 40 ks are stoney and slow going, plenty of sandy patches, allow a day from Birdsville.

I just re-enabled the
Inside Track
note - it was never completed however there is access to the plot file via the links.
I will get Damian to convert this to the new format when he comes back from holidays in two weeks.
Hope this helps a little in the mean time.

I did one better and imported the routing data into the database and published a basic trek note in the new format. So have a look you can get the position of the start/end point from Route Control. Enjoy the trip and if you can please get us some more waypoints for the major junctions and points of interst you see along the way, mind you from memory there is not a great deal to stop and see (unless you have station access).

J C (NQ) posted:
Thank you Chris, Time, David and Ruth
I recently did the
Inside track
in preference to the Outside track for the historical/sentimental value. As it turned out, it was supposed to be in better condition after the rain in September/October washed the topsoil off the Outside track and exposed the coarse gravel base.
I was having trouble finding any current information on the
inside track
prior to departure, so decided to just "followed my nose". The feeling of total isolation out there is amazing and makes you realise how/why so many of the early explorers perished.
My wife and I went on the outback tour in November last year, in our 2007 Cherokee CRD Ltd accompanied by my father in his 1995 diesel Discovery. I now have a record of the track from my Garmin GPS, if anyone wants it.
Our trip was roughly - Townsville, Birdsville (Big Red), Wilpena (
Skytrek
also), Kingston-On-Murray (Overland Corner Hotel is recommended for a look), Hall's Gap, Bendigo, Eildon, Jamieson, Erica, Moe, Sale, Bairnsdale, Bruthen, Omeo, Benambra, Corryong, Gilmore, Wee Jasper, Wollongong, Sydney, Wisemans Ferry, Maitland, Cessnock, Glen Innes (old road to Grafton next time), Dandahra Road to Mann River bridge (river level had dropped enough for the bridges to be open), Cangai, Lilydale bridge, Copmanhurst, Whiporie, Casino, Fairy Hill, Kyogle, Cougal. Rathdowney, Beaudesert, Mt Tamborine, Gold Coast, Toowoomba, Hampton, Yarraman, Ban Ban Springs, Childers and then the coast road home to Townsville.
Walkers Crossing
, Innamincka and the Strzelecki will be included next time.......
Regards
John

replied: Sorry John, I must have misread your query and thought you wanted information. Normally I live in Birdsville and travel the
Inside track
in preference to the Outside track - at the time you were on your trip I was in my 'other' place in Rathdowney!
