4wding around Tasmania

Submitted: Friday, Feb 01, 2008 at 23:04

Member - Luke (SA)

Evening all, I am planning a 3 week trip to Tassie (honeymoon) for the end of April, leaving Adelaide around the 28th.

After looking around this site there doesn't seem to be a lot of treks loaded. So after looking around other sites I found the Tassie National Parks site. Tassie 4wding

I am not planning a full 3 week itinery but am hoping to do a few treks like Montezuma falls, Mt Wellington and do a few touristy things.

I would like to get in contact with a few 4wd clubs in Tassie or any EO members that may be interested in showing me a few tracks etc.

I would appreciate any information please e-mail (lukecareen@primusonline.com.au) or MM me.

Cheers Luke.

Hi I just came back from Tassie on Sunday. Didn't do to much 4wding but did try and pack in a fair bit of touring. Have a look at my blog that I am currently updating.

Luke - we sell this book in our shop and I agree with Mark. It is undoubtedly the ideal book written by a local for travellers like us. Great drives you'll never find published anywhere else. But take heed of the season as I fear its not going to be in your favour.

That's what I was thinking. April is not a time for camping in Tassie anyway. Dec - Jan was cold enough and wet enough. I wouldn't call that experience of mine much of a holiday and would have a fit if that was what I had to expect for a honeymoon. Seriously, though, Tassie is a great place. I had been thinking of doing the overnight walk through Cradle Mounting - Lake St Clair for my 40th next week but it was too hard to organise with the kids and the beginning of the school year etc etc. I watched a show on Australian Geographic with Sorel who showed a keen pair of walkers who prefer this walk in Winter and the footage was sensational and very inspiring - how about that for the honeymoon experience? That would be romantic.

Michelle was looking at the rainfall for the Cradle Mountain area & in the dryest month of Feb it still on average rained every 2nd day :-) Possibly the East Coast may be the pick of the destinations for April as far as the weather goes................but then much of the good 4 wheel driving is over on the West Coast/Queenstown area.

Luke, also look at Michelle's diary from David and Michelle's Tassie trip. As we were sightseeing, we did not do 4wd treks as such; just drove around and enjoyed the sights and scenery. Lots of good walks too.

Enjoy the trip.

Yes - I've been very slack and have not ever published all those wonderful treks we did which was the intent of course. However, this was one of the reasons we have migrated to the super cool new Trek Note system and the Tassie ones are almost at the top of the to do list now so by April they'll be there definately - promise, call me if they aren't and I'll do it! :-)

We spent from 20th of December to 18 Jan in Tassie. Loved every minute of it. Much to my husband disgust we never stayed on schedule, we had brought See Tassie Cards, which are well worth the $$ if you do everything that cards allow you to do, we did almost everything, from a Jet Boat ride, hang gliding, Port Arthur, Air walk , brewery tour at Cascades, though we found Boags was better, and many other things. We have three kids and the kids had the time of their lives...something that they will never forget. They saw Wild Oats finish...did a walk around the entire fleet of the Sydney to Hobart.

Don't forget to visit the seahorse, platypus houses and Grubb shaft gold ( Beaconsfield mine is next door )is worth a visit. You really need a day and half at Port Arthur, not only do the day walk around, but also the night and go out to Ilse of the Dead, we did not have time. We also did the histroic walk around Hobart, some interesting stuff on that tour, that was one of the things on the See Tassie cards.

A don't take all the weather as cold and shower....when we were there it did actually get to 40C.

We are planning on going back, when we get the kids off our hands, in about another 7 years...though the little buggers will probably want to come too. There is an awesome firework factory in Glenorchy.....my b-i-l wallet was left a little light after a visit to that shop.

Fot the record we did six weeks on the road and took over 3500 pics.....so make sure you have a few empty memory cards or take a laptop to store the pics on...

Thanks to all for your information. I do realize it will be cold at that time of year but are willing to give it a go.

We will just have to take a lot of warm clothing.

Thanks again
