I can tell you beyond irrefutable doubt the following re your above described experience.

(1) K & N filters do have a positive effect on performance and fuel consumption.

(2) If you go anywhere near dust, that same K & N filter will turn to a 'mud pack' in an instant and all your positive gains in (1) will disappear like the DODO bird.

(3) The Toyota genuine filter is the one and only filter for a Troopy when it goes off the bitumen.

How do I know.


(a) I have a Troopy and found out by experience.

(b) I have a JEEP which has two air filters (K&N and OEM Paper)

(c) JEEP performs better with the K&N with better fuel consumption. In dust the K&N turns to Chit.

So I carry a spare paper filter element for the JEEP (OEM $20.00)
and if changing from bitument to dirt swith air filter elements. Takes about a minute all up.

The Troopy now runs an OEM Filter 100% of the time.

There you have it.

The reason your vehicle goes better with the K&N filter is that it is more porous....IE: it doesn't filter as well!! If you want to go to the next step (better than a K&N), try just driving your truck with no air filter at all.......it'll go great!!! (for a few thousand klicks at any rate). hahaha

Not often I agree with that old grey nomad; but on this occasion, Lucky is on the money!!!! leave the K&N in the box.

From experience, every engine reconditioner I've been associated with won't warrant a new or recoed motor if it has a K&N foam type filter in it. Too many rebuilds of dusted motors.

You decide if it is worth it.

I dont know what people have about oil foam filters, i have them fitted to my GQ diesal, from 90,000ks to now 360,000ks the old girl still runs perfactly with no oil usage. I have done all the dusty roads singaly and in convoy. I still get 12lts-100ks unladen and 14 to 15 towing the camper trailer. The only down side they can be messy when servicing. The motor has never been dusted, or had the head removed. Col

I use a Unifilter, the Aussie version of a k and n.

I rotate it as its cylindrical, and move it 1/3rd rotation at a time, clean n re-oil each third time.

I have a bigger exhaust system, and find it does make a difference.

All these tests may be true but in reality what they supposedly let thru in the field would prob be so small and insignificant.

K and N been around for years, used by thousands for years with no ill effects.

I think your more likely to have issues with a paper one.

If you are bush and a paper one collapses from moisture on you, unless you have a spare your stuffed, with a unifilter or k and n, if it blocks up you only need to look at it round the camp at night and clean it, refit, good as new.

Each to his own I guess.
