I've been using the Magellan Explorist XL for two years. Here's three attributes you may like to consider:
1. Topo maps from the Magellan programs, now loaded on my PC, are better than 1:250,000 topo maps in terms of basic topo detail - contours, tracks etc. This means I can plan, locate, enter waypoints, build routes, etc, all on the large screen PC monitor at home & download onto the
GPS for use in the 4 x 4.
2. Large screen of the unit is readable while travelling. You can drill down to very minute topo detail while out in the field.
3. Also useful, (however, a function not used by me) as a street
directory - I assume like the 'newby' TomToms etc, but without a voice command.

Hiya Guys
The street
directory is pathetic in my opinion for the XL,especially comin from Magellan,Sure it will get you there,or there abouts....
No auto re-route which is a pain, use the extra $300 on a tom tom etc etc..
As they said above the TOPO is magnificent
cheers
