NSW Outback Trip- Cobar to Camerons Corner

Am heading off to do this trip in a few weeks

Places we will be visiting are Menindee Lakes, Silverton, Broken Hill, Tibooburra, Camerons Corner, White Cliffs then back to Cobar.

My question is that my wife wants to take our Coromal Magnum 420 series camper rather than tent it and I'm wondering if the camper will be okay.

It has independent suspension with 8 leaf springs, stated weight is 900kgs. Tyres are 14 inch.

I'm pretty sure the suspension would handle it but worried about possible clearance issues. Some of the roads we are travelling are Barrier Highway, Silver City Highway and Jump Up Loop road.

Has anyone done this trip recently with a similarly equipped camper or can shed any light on whether the camper would handle it okay,

Any advice would be much appreciated,

We travelled this road last year in a Coromal Off road van. The road from Broken Hill to tibooburra was excellent and you should have no problems. We didn't make it to Camerons Corner but believe the road is good, but from camerons corner to Innamincka is rough in places, best check with Nat. Parks when you get to Tibooburra. I really loved this trip and would like to go back again someday.

We are only going as far as Camerons Corner so Innamincka won't be an issue for us

perhaps leave the CT at Tibooburra and day trip to CC via the loop road.

We did this trip April a couple of years back. It was quite pleasant (>12 degress o'night) but a week or two later the temps dropped dramatically. So be prepared to rug up!!!

i have magnum 440 off road have done that trip and bore track into innaminka,no problems other than stones cover rear window and have stone deflector,take plenty of drinking water.

Hi Michael,

Just came back from Tibooburra and CC last weekend.

Its bitumen all the way from BH to Menindee lakes and all the roads around the lakes can easily be done in a 2wd car.

Road from BH to Tib is a mix of dirt and bitumen stretches. Its all in good nick with some sections being a bit rocky but again easily doable with a 2wd car.

Trip out to CC from Tib is much the same only a few short sections that had corragations. Nothing to worry about.

The jump up loop is excellent (and great scenery) and you won't have to worry about high clearance. The Gorges loop is easy but more gibbers.

We did as some one else mentioned and based ourselves in Tib (3 nights) and just day travelled from there. Plenty to see and do out there and the locals are very friendly and informative.

I reckon your camper would handle it with ease. Just be careful of any unprotected water/plastic fittings underneath. I had a rock bounce off the back of our Jayco somewhere and hit the top rear of the water tank (metal shield only does front and bottom) and put a very small hole in it.

Just take it slow on the rocky dirt sections and you will be fine. The weather at the moment is great but who knows what it will be like in 2 weeks time.

Oh and its bitumen all the way to Silverton from BH. Make sure you go to the Mundi Mundi plains to watch the sunset!!!

Thank you to everyone for their input and advice.

You have put my mind at ease so I will go ahead and take the camper which is a relief for my wife who wasn't that keen on tenting it.

It will also mean we won't have to carry as much extra gear in the Patrol.

I have bought some spare springs and bearings just in case there is a problem
