Gu patrol pros & cons

Hi All, my mate is looking at a 98/99 Gu Patrol with a 2.8 6cyl turbo diesel ., just wandering if there is anything in particular to look at. Any good or bad points wounld be greatly apreciated.

Head gaskets give trouble if not not maintained correctly. Can get pricey to fix (but then, what doesn't?).

Stefan P (GU 2.8 6cyl) was told by the "Experts" that his head gasket was the problem with his overheating and decided that the diagnosis was wrong, he put a re con radiator into it and that helped a bit, but when he replaced his header tank the over heating practically disappeared, cost including radiator recon (which was nessisary as it was near the end of it's life anyway) was a couple of hundred dollars. That was several thousand Km ago, and all the "experts" wanted to replace the head gasket, when it was a flaw in the header tank plastic causing the problem. How many others have just gone ahead with the head gasket repair unnecessarily ????

I don't know StefanP so I can't comment on his vehicle, but I've seen enough rusty 2.8's cooling systems with cracked heads to justify my comments.

I wonder how many of your so called experts bothered to do a leakdown test?

On mine they did....pressure test, leak down, and the one where they check for combustion gas in the water......all came back fine. But was still blowing some bubbles in coolant. So they kept saying we need to pull the head, I said its being doing this for about 40,000kms now to varing severety and with the high comp of a turbo diesel surely something would have let go by now???

Any way there was a very fine split in the header tank when under high load IE Hwy travel it would open a little lose pressure and get warm, then suck some air in on cool down, Hence the bubbles in the system. I said to one place let me run it on the dyno so we can see what is happening at high speed as it is a little hard to put my head under the bonnet at 110KPH. His reply nah mate not worth it head is gone, looking at $3000-$4000???

Well he was wrong in my case.......another guy in my 4WD club wasted alot of money on a head that was NOT his getting warm problem. It seems if something gets a rep for a problem everybody assumes the worst first. And if that twit had just put it on the dyno we would have seen the split in the header tank.

hill starts and pulling the boat up the boat ramp are a problem due to lack of power ! and if the clutch goes its expensive .just replaced mine at $1800 due to the duel mass flywheel. but fuel economy is ok ! But next 4by will have bigger donk .

They are about as tough as a pair of hobnail boots & just as refined, properly maintained they will take you anywhere and back many times over.

just as long as its not a gold 99 2.8 GU cos it could be one i know of that was definitly made on a friday/monday.endless trouble until he got rid of it,heads,inj pump,turbo,spinning balancer off twice etc etc.but also heard of some good stories about them.go figure cheers Paul

If the gold one was a friday, my blue one was a monday.....Hey he can buy mine for around 12k or so if he wants, its blowing bubbles in the radiator but otherwise goes really well!!

At least you know with mine your up for at least a head gasket, or maybe a head, I just got to the point where I decided to get a better one for towng the boat anc getting home under my own propulsion

G'day Ray...

As said by 'on patrol'.........mine was showing classic head gasket/cracked head symptoms at around 120km but after all tests came up negative (experts still wanted to pull head off) it was a simple plastic header tank problem. Now 170km and going fine.

As to the power, can be sluggish off the line but hey its a 2.8.
Once rolling they are as responsive as a 4.2 and if you know your 2.8 well and pick the right revs in time they will beat a 4.2 up hills ect.

Great on fuel if you drive them that way IE I drove for economy last week and got 11.5lt/100 around town. Push 120kph and watch it rise to around 16lt/100.

Yes they run a duel mass flywheel which can fail early.....fit an aftermarket solid flywheel and it will out last the car I reckon!!

Off road you need to be in the right gear at the right time or pay the price.....They love 2000rpm-3000rpm.

I run 32" tyres on mine and it has not made a real difference on power. I also run no mufflers which makes it a little noisey but as its my TRUCK (wheres samsgone again!!! LOL) I don't have to please the misses, and that makes the turbo spool up about 500rpm less and has made a HUGE difference to its drivability.

I have only towed 1.5 ton with it and while it was a bit slow to wind up, it sat happy on 110kph.

They are a bargain buy second hand and should the motor go you have a good solid car to put a BIG motor into.

The gear box is smaller than the 4.2 BUT it is out of the 300zx so it will go the distance no problems, diffs ect are all the same just different ratios.

I have climbed dunes at stockton beach which other BIG motor cars have had problems with, they are an all to often over looked car.

After all that, they really do need the driver to know how to extract the best from them, Its been a learning curve for me as it is my first Diesel and probably not the best to learn about them on.

Keep them on the boil 2000rpm-3000rpm and they will surprise alot of people.

I would prefer a 4.2 but MY budget would not go that far so I settled for the 2.8 and have to sayi am happy with it for the $15000 I saved over the 4.2 of the same vintage. So if it is a budget decision go for it.

yep i agree i had a gq 2.8td 85 kw the gu 95kw same motor mechanic"ly slightly diff in cam timing, efi pump, with intercooler, good motor, dog on take offs with my 1.1t boat, bought it with 86k's keep it till 479k's same clutch 4 timing belts no eng probs at all been bottom to top middle to east on tour,as stefan said if you now how to drive it there fine, economy fine at 90 to 95 kms insurance to dear now on old girl, sold it got gu 4.2td love the low down torqe same economy at 110 hope this helps, plus nissan diffs way better:-))

3.0 TD Navara, is not real flash on the uphill starts towing either.

not enuf grunt to get started properly .. been caught too many times for it to be the driver ..
