Article Overview - Paraburdoo to Murchison via Mt Augustus
This trek cuts straight down the middle from Paraburdoo to Murchison and it's a great scenic alternative from the North West Coastal Highway and the Great Northern Highway. View Full Article...
Travelled this route 18 April 2008 with off road Coromal Magnum camper trailer. Several big water crossings between Mt Augustus and Dooley Downs Station, very muddy. Road in poor condition right through to Ashburton Downs Rd. Road graded near Asburton Downs Station. Expect heavy fuel consumption and average speed of approx 20 - 30kmh due to wash outs etc. through to Ashburton Downs Station. Recommend 4wd with low range capability and good ground clearance at the moment.

would not be pleasant crossing Frederick or Lyons rivers at the moment if there has been any sort of decent rains there.

We did this route in 99. The road access to the Dooley Downs Track is easy except where you cross the Ashburton River next to the Ashburton Downs Station.
The stretch along Dooley Downs is very challenging with bulldust, potholes track, river bed driving and low range driving down the swith back country towards the Dooley Downs Air strip.
Once at Mt Augustus it is an easy drive on the Murchison Beef Road during the dry.
The bloke at the Murchison Roadhouse has to be the miserablist person in WA. His attitude is famous!! So just enjoy the Basil Fawlty of the Murchison.
We camped at Mt Augustus Station for 3 days and thoroughly enjoyed their hosptality.

Maybe a different operator at Murchison than when we were there five years ago. The lady at the Museum behind the Council building told us about the showers run by the road house. We had good hot showers and offered to pay, but they wouldn't take anything. Darn good service.
