Stamp Duty ..do you know..

The Sunshine State is now charging 4% if you register, or transfer
I guess, a V8. Thats 1% more than a 6 cyl. Is that justifiable?
NSW, on the other hand, dont care about cylinders, they charge 3% for the first $45k, then 5% for anything above.
Thats $4100 for your new $100k LC200 or similar.
Do I recall something about All State Stamp Duties being phased out in return for States getting GST revenue ?
I'm not sure what happens in the other States, but if some are going up, I can guess the rest will follow.
I was going to have a few Bundys & Cola to calm the nerves but
guzzling teenies have forced the Govt to put another $1.30 on
the price of those. Hang on, I've got a bottle in the cupboard,
I think I'll have it straight. :)). ...oldbaz.

The increased charges in Queensland were announced last year and came into effect on Jan 1, 2008. When they were announced the Govt didn't hide the fact that the extra revenue was needed to fund a shortfall in Mental health budget. That was the purpose behind the increase.

Are you trying to say that there weren't enough stupid people paying their "stupid" tax?

Just curious.

PS: Can anyone tell me the difference between "Tax" and "Stamp Duty"?

The 2007/2008 Queensland budget was already in place. When extra funding was needed for mental health they had to decide how to get the extra funds mid way through a buget period. They came up with the idea if increasing stamp duty rates - sold the idea to the public pretty well by putting higher stamp duty on 6 and 8 cylinder cars. It seems to have worked - was very little public response at time of announcement. Of all the ways the State Govt raises revenue - this one seems to have the least resistence - so they went for it.

Here's a question?
Do the other States calculate their Stamp Duty on the cost price of the vehicle before you add the GST or after the GST.
I think after is a tax on a tax.
I asked the question in the ACT and lost but I know of one other who won their fight in the ACT

$30000 base price $900 Stamp Duty
3000 GST
$33000 Total $990 Stamp Duty
