Smokey 4.2 TD Cruiser 80 Series.

Hi Guys,
Just wondering what would cause this smoke.
I've got a 91 TD GXL 80 series manual cruiser.She's got 286500 k's on her now, goes a treat. But she blows smoke. Has done for a while now. I've noticed when I travel away from the sun late evening. It's whitish in colour. A mate has followed me and said that it's not dark like oil smoke it's rather white and fine not heavy and black. After doing some heavy beach work at high tide in the soft sand the smoke completely disappears. He said it does not smell like oil smoke. When cold it is more noticeable. It does appear to burn oil under normal driving conditions but under heavey slow going it does, not much though. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Another query I have is when I bought her 3 years ago she came with 31x10.5x15 Duellers on her. She does about 2500rpm at a 100k, is this normal rpm for that speed? I ask cause I find myself wanting to reach for another gear when doing 100kph? I was thinking that the next set of tyres that goes on her would be 33's to lower the revs that she does just a tad.
Do those revs sound about right for doing a 100k?.
I was wondering if the two are related.

The bit about burning oil is suppose to read that it does not burn oil under normal conditions.

Hi Rock Ape,
I can't see anywhere in the service history if the previous two owners had touched the injectors.
They have listed everything that has been bought, Fixed or add to it.
So may be a trip to an Injector specialist .

When I first looked at before I bought her she had 33 on. When I went back they had taken them off and put the 31's on. I couldn't get them to put the 33's back on.

No use losing sleep over it.

Black smoke denotes too much fuel, or bad timing causing incomplete burn, white smoke denotes not enough air or compression. Check the inlet for estrictions and also the turbo for excess play.
If you are not loosing coolant, and the turbo is boosting well (2000 green light) have the compression chaecked.
Lastly, it is a common fault of these motors to bypass oil back into the inlet. Install a pneumaticr water trap in the line, and empty the oil each fuelup.

Whitish smoke can often be condensation in the exhaust burning off.
Whitish sweet smelling smoke can also be coolant burning off ie: leaking head gasket or coolant somehow making its way into the combustion chamber, water cooled turbo?.

I can't be that, 18 months ago the head warped one very hot November day. It had to be machined, spent quiet a few dollars getting that fixed. The level has not dropped at all in that time.
She's a factory TD.

I have a 94 TD 80 Series and run 33's(285 75 16's) on 16x8's. At 100km's an hour on the gps I am doing 2400rpm or just under. Whit smoke normally means unburnt fuel. i would have it checked out by a specialist diesel shop. Get them to put it on the Dyno and have a look. Saves you money if you dont need the injectors done. Though if the injectors havent ever been done I would recomend it. Also I can recomend getting the fuel pump timing done and your valves shimmed. Just had my valves shimmed and its a different car. Hope this helps

I'm thinkin' I'll save up and send it to a specialist diesel Grease monkey with a Dyno. As you pionted out its money well spent.
The fuel pump timing could be something as well. I had the top of the pump off a few months back to replace the o' ring in top of the pump. Had a bugger of a time putting that back together. Not good when I have hands the size of dinner plates.
It does not lack power, it goes like the clappers.
I'll look into getting it tested on a dyno.

32's are equivalent to your standard size tyre. And all the reasons mentioned can give you what you describe including turbo seals. If you never ever have to touch your coolant level I wouldn't worry about it too much until it gets worse then take it in to get checked. it will be more easily diagnosed if you let it play out a little longer. Just make sure you never lose water.

I dropped into my local tyre shop and 32's are pretty close to the standard setup for my model. My 31's look a bit small, I'll chase around and see if someone locally could maybe loan/borough a set of 33's for a week to give me some idea what rpm it will do.
I always thought the tyres on her where a little on the small size.

I'm put an engine flush in her next time I do an oil change.
Can't hurt.

white smoke is unburnt fuel,black is soot (burnt) when motor is cool white smoke is present when you work it hard engine block heats up and burns excess fuel (no white smoke) A test you can do when cold is at idle have a mate at rear of car you go and crack an injector one at a time motor will shudder but not stop, if smoke clears, it is that cylender causing you grief. If its been looked after it wont be a bent conrod from water compression (water crossing) but after 285k i would do injecter changeout !

I'm thinking an injector service is in order, I've replaced the fuel filter, cleaned the K&N air filter and thrown in some Chemtec diesel additive. I asked a mate who would be close by who could help me and there is somebody.there's a bloke in Yamba, I've actually know his younger brother for sometime now. He has a Dyno and is in to diesels. I'll give him a ring and make time to go and see him.
