Vista and Oziexplorer

Submitted: Saturday, May 03, 2008 at 18:10

Willem

Yerr my old laptop shat itself in the Flinders this week. It is 65 months of age and so it has had a good run.

I am lookoing at buying a Toshiba on special for around the $900 mark and it should have Vista loaded.

Question: How easy does Oziexplorer and Vista work together.?

I did a forum search and saw some problems a while back with the Raster Maps to Ozi and running Vista.

Are most problems sorted now?

It works fine Willem, there is a new version of Ozi that claims to remove the annoying error message when getting out of Ozi, but its just a click on the error message and jobs right. Don't let Vista stop u buying it.

I bought a Sony laptop last year, came with Vista. I perservered with Vista for about 3 months before I decided to install XP. Now, with the same laptop running XP, I am able to run far more programs simultaneously than I was able to run using Vista.

My understanding is that 2 gig of ram is the minimum that you should have to comfortably run Vista. I only have 1 gig in my Sony.

I would have to reboot my laptop about every 1 1/2 days as it would run out of memory. Now, maybe this was caused by running a program called Lotus Organiser, but I never spent the time to figure this out.

But as others have said, they are happy running Vista with Ozi, so you should be okay.

However, if possible, I still think you should have a minimum of 2 gig ram, which in a $900 laptop, it may only be 1 gig. At the very least, if it only has 1 gig, confirm that the 1 gig is on a single stick, so that if you wish to upgrade to 2 gig at some time in the future, you only have to buy an additional 1 gig ram.

Typically, laptops can take 2 sticks of ram; so, if the 1 gig is 2 pieces of 512Mb, then to upgrade to 2 gig, you have to buy 2 gig, not 1.

Hi Willem

No experience with Ozi, but from the comments here it seems to work. Meanwhile I HATE VISTA. It takes about twice as long to get through the maze to do anything - i have it on a laptop for an organisation i work with.

Our daughter gave the Old Rooster a computer for his birthday which had Vista loaded. It just couldn't cope and kept on freezing. It wouldn't even acknowledge my fairly new printer. She took Vista off and put on XP and it is much better and everything works.

So many people are asking us how to get rid of Vista and put on XP.

At the shop where i work, we looked at getting an additional computer - the quote was $700 with Vista, or $1,400 with Vista and the ability to change back to XP. Someone is cashing in on Vista's unpopularity.

Toshibas are very good laptops, so if you can cope with Vista (we all will have to some day soon), and the Ozi will work, it sounds like a good deal.

Hi Willem
You can still but new Toshiba laptops with XP installed if you do not want to go with Vista.

Well never fear my friends, im still around, had a bit of time off over April, a great week away in the bush, and the holiday from hell over on the east coast of cockroach country. LOL

Funny you should mention new lappy's, cos while away we bought our first one.
HP Pavillion with Vista home premium, and despite all the talk of slow speed etc, I have yet to fault it.
I too wish to set it up with ozi and maps, have both here on disc's, but will need to update them i suspect.
Will be interested with your results, and may need to pick your brain with the techno stuff Hahahaha

just make sure you download the latest version of ozi (3.95 i think)onto the pc, before trying to register with the serial number.
bit the bullet with vista on the new laptop recently and its a bit frustrating after 5 years with the last pc on XP.
but i seem to remember saying the same about XP, after years of windows 98.
PS ozi seems to run fine on vista.
