Hi Potsy,

Many hire companies will not allow you to take their vehicles to places that you may want to visit. Also, daily insurance can be very expensive so extended hire (in my opinion) just doesn't stack up.

A study was done by me when the in laws came up here hiring one of those troopy campers.
They were allowed to take it wherever they wanted, I can't remember exactly how much it cost, but it was around a couple of hundred dollars a day. That's about $1500 a week. Travel for a month and that's a lot of money for a car you then have to give back. If you buy the initial outlay is more but you can travel cheaper for years.

Hi Barnsey,

When I was last checking about a year ago several of the companies had small print that said they would only let you drive on some roads / tracks if they gave separate written permission eg. Simpson, Canning, Bungles etc. When I submitted my proposed route they informed me that they would only give approval at the time of pick-up of the vehicle. I was not prepared to have my plans dashed at the last minute so did not go ahead with a hire. I also note that several of the companies have almost identical wording (small print) on their contracts, many of the lesser known hire companies are just agents for the bigger companies.

I dont know about any studies, but I used to hire 4WD's before I bought one for myself.

At about $160 per day the price soon adds up but they generally give you low kms vehicles, and you don't have to take as much care with them as you would your own.

I met a German couple, a few years ago in Darwin who were selling there 80 series with the lot roof top tent duel spare wheel carrier draw system, you get the idea, they travelled for a year and said there wasn't a track or road they didn't go down.

They spent around $40000 setting it up and about $20000 travelling, they said that if the got $25000 return on there car it would have been a very cheap holiday, in comparison to hiring the same gear.

Cheers Steve.
