Hand Winch Info

Submitted: Friday, Nov 30, 2001 at 00:00

Rob

Does anyone have any info about an "anchor" brand 4wd type winch. It looks very similar to a Tirfir and weighs the same so it is solid enough in construction. Uses 11mm wire cable. Was made by Anchor Engineering Co. Ltd. in Richmond Victoria and has Dept of Labour & Industry (Vic) certification.
I'm trying to find out if anyone supplies spare parts like the shear pin and a handle.

yes...seen that Tim. Although they are all latest models and this one looks to be at least 10 years old.

Suggestion, the shear pin is probably nonferrous metal, so all you need is some rod of the same diametre (probably 6mm) and cut your own.

Don't know the winch you are talking about but know the design. All i have to add is that in talking to a chain and winch guy who makes them (for the engineering industry) and sells them and lectures 4WD clubs on safe uses of hand winches - he said be wary of the Tirfor copies that are made out of aluminium or alloy composites as they have a tendency to warp and break when used to pull in anything other than a dead straight line.

Please clarify 'pull in anything other than a dead straight line.'? As once the strain is taken up everything lines up to be in a dead straight line!!

Hi Rob,
I recently purchased from a guy the same brand of winch as you mention it's actually called a Super Til winch that was made by a company called Anchor Engineering I believe which no longer exists?, however there is a company in New Zealand who sells a wire rope winch referred to as " Super Til " , I have sent an email to them to enquire whether this brand is in any way related to the one made by Anchor Engineering, will let you know if I get any info back from them.

P.S Yes I agree with you on their construction which is why I didn't hesitate to buy mine - I figured being older and made in Australia (Not a cheap import) was peace of mind in regard to quality. and I certainly didn't want to spend around $400 secondhand to $700 new on a Tirfor which wouldn't be any better.

Cheers Robert

Rob,

Apparently Super Til winches are still being manufactured in Japan by a company
called Honko Seisakujyo Co Ltd.
Pacific Hoists ( pacific-hoists@xtra.co.nz ) represents them in New Zealand and carry spare parts for the 3
models, the person I communicated with was Glen Hall New Zealand Manager who was quite helpful.
Apparently Anchor Engineering still exists as PWB AnchorEngineering but sells a Chinese made unit called Tugger.

Thanks for the in-depth info Robert. I haven't had a chance to check back for a while but I will get in contact with that person and find out what I can.
