Article Overview - Engine Performance
Having a vehicle that is performing well is important for reasons other than just speed and power. Improving reliability and efficiency will also result in better fuel consumption, hence reducing operating costs. View Full Article...
I would be interested to hear from anybody who has fitted headers and exhaust systems to their 4.2 ltr GU non turbo patrol. I would like to know what headers and exhaust systems used and if there is any noticeable difference to power and economy.....

G'day Billy,

Sorry to say that I can't give you an answer to your enquiry, I'm answering to let you know that someone has at least read your post. I also have trouble with the amount of past, current and "my mate has one" Nissan owners not making any comment!!

I had extractors and larger pipe fitted to my 60, not run up on the dyno before fitting, so it's hard to tell what the improvement was. With the 80, I've been told that the Beaudesert (Spelling??) system will work well as an interum fix............ next is to fit a hair dryer!!
Possibly ask your question on the Patrol forum, to get an informed answer?

Hope this helps a little.

Cheers,
Wayne.

Hi billytwo,
My GQ was a naturally aspirated 4.2L that went OK.... I did try a larger exhaust but although it had a louder note, it didn't go any harder. Then we bought a camper trailer and slowed down even more! Fitted a turbo, in our case a Turbo-Glide system from Russellvale in NSW, and haven't looked back.... except to see who it was we overtook!
It's an expensive thing.... if you can do the work yourself it can save you maoney, our was $2900 for the kit, and I spent another $2000 on fitting it, getting my injectors and pump overhauled, tuning the fuel system, and fitting a booster gauge and a pyrometer. I wouldn't have a turboed engine without the pyro.... it's cheap insurance to know whats going on under the bonnet!

Let us know what you end up with.

Cheers

Hi Brian, I agree turbo's the way to go have owned several over the years in fact have owned 13 4wds over the past 33 years. The last turbo I had fitted was on a 95 2.8 ltr Forerunner by Tony Motson (Motsons Turbos) at Beaudesert Brisbane, I cannot speak highly enough of that Safari system and the service provided by Motsons. I will proberly go with headers and 3inch mandrel system until the funds are available for a turbo...cheers Ernie

Hi, have a GQ 4.2 diesel tried the headers and 2.5 exhaust and did very little picked up a bit on fuel economy. Then fitted a super charger, which is way out of your price range. I was able to keep the headers and the low down tourge from idle is spot on, something a turbo is unable to supply. Its been on fo 200,000ks with no problems at all. A turbo and bigger exhaust is the only way to get what you want for minimum dollars. Col
