No you need a Toyota Landcruise with BF Goodridge tyres, a Engle fridge, EFS suspension, GME uhf radio and Lightforce spot lights..... and a big antenna on the bull bar!

A Forester will go most place if not all places a current 4X4 will go, they have low range and good ground clearance.

The only thing I would do is look at tyres and get something that is not so much road orientated.

Yes you can, there are a couple of hills on the Border Track that may trouble you, the rest of the park should be fine in the Suby.

If you are looking at doing the Baan Hill track from Lameroo to Keith then a Forester will be fine, don't worry about the Border Track as that is some way from the Baan Hill track, the biggest problem is there is one section of clay that is VERY slippery when wet, about 5Kms into the track from memory.
There is an excellent book called Mallee Tracks which has very detailed trip notes on this track plus many more in the region.
