Does anyone know if it is still possible to travel to
Laura from The Lynd
Junction via Mt Surprise,
Chillagoe, and Wrotham Park or is the section from Wrotham Park to
Laura now closed to through traffic?
Regards
Pete

I was in the area a month ago. Palmer River Goldfields to Palmerville has been closed.

So if you are at the Palmer River Gold fields and want to go south towards
Chillagoe what is the best way? (I was planning going west to Palmerville and then south towards
Chillagoe)....

Palmerville to
Maytown (Palmer Goldfields) has had restriction for a long time. However Palmerville to
Laura via Fairlight is gazetted road as far as I know. Never had a problem going that way.

That was our plan as
well but cannot be done. Apparantly shooters have upset the station owners and the link is shut. We came from
Laura to the goldfilelds (good trip) and then had to head back to My Carbine,
Mareeba,
Ravenshoe and down to Lynd
Junction. (Time got tight and we were not able to get back to
Chillagoe.- one for next time)

Pitty as
Chillagoe is an interesting area with the old smelter, marble mines and
the caves. (got to beat
Mareeba !)

A
check with DNRM (Dept of Natural Resources and Mines) in
Cairns yesterday reveals that BOTH roads from Palmerville (north to Fairlight or East to
Maytown) are gazetted public roads. There are no registered road closures on either road.
Bottom line - the roads are OPEN!
