At work we have a Dual Cab Hilux TD SR, 3 years old with 98 000 on the clock, we do many rough
miles on Hawkesbury
sandstone country (probably 3/4 time on dirt). Apart from the needing to add 2 inches to the ride height & get rid of the
grader blade Toyota bullbar, we found out that the door seals don't seal water out at all. Sandy
creek crossing & within seconds we were ankle deep in water, the kick plates as you get into the car, actually cover the seals making them useless. Has anyone experienced this issue on water crossings ? I would recommend removing kick plates before doing any major crossings!
June storms 07 resulted in lots of mud & stuck vehicles, our work Traytop Landcruisers have constantly had issues with hand brakes, as a result of mud / sand in brakes. Many
services later & still hand brakes continually need adjusting, almost once a month. Is there a solution to this brake issue ?

Hi Beddo. The old Landrovers used to have holes drilled around the diameter of the drum in the corner where the shoe dia meets the drum mount face.I think there were around 6 holes about 1/4 dia which allowed water/mud to escape as the drum revolved. This may be one solution.

My handbrake cable was binding and not allowing full application. Had to replace the whole cable.

Beddo,
Considering the conditions you're working in, reckon every month would be about right.
Have found that they need to be adjusted up pretty tight, without binding of course, to last anytime at all.
Hooroo,
Bob.

I've heard of the hilux water issue. Think probably on 4wdmonthly
forum - I'd
check over there. (Note: I don't think they found a solution, yet)

Is the water coming in past the door seals or through the drain holes in the rocker panel under the doors?

Hi Beddo,
Since when has there not been an issue with Land Cruiser handbrakes?
Do a search if you want to
check it out.

Like Bob, I adjust
mine tighter than Toyota suggest. Supposed to back each side of 8 notches at each drum. I back
mine off 4.

Our vehicles are fleet vehicles & so most are an experience to drive. The handbrake issue has resulted in one taking out a fence when opening a
gate ( short walk to get it back) & another going thru a roller door, especially when office staff drive them.
The Hilux leak, the fellas just said it was the kick plates that were the issue, they lost a radio mounted UNDER the
seat.

ah ha your problem is not toyotas its your work driving procedures.
every place ive worked require you to place the vehicle in 1 or r with the handbrake on.
the guy through the fence would have got a written warning for breach of procedure
