Well after lots and lots of thought and investigation and consideration I figured what I need to avoid an exploded 7.5" front diff on my 2000 Hilux was to focus on using traction to get out of difficult spots and not momentum (ie crash and bang).

A TJM or an ARB? Well very expensive, and for better or for worse I went for a front and rear Detroit Truetrac. It's an amazing difference so far on just some dirt and mud, though not fully test yet. Front and rear came to about the same or less cost installed than a selectable air driven lockable rear. So doing the front was as much about insurance as traction. And i already have a compressor etc etc

Kedron Diff Lappers in brisbane answered a million of my email queries about full lockers and mechanical LSD's, and even offered to let me drive their hilux's with Soflockers or truetracs in them.

Basically why not a soflocker in the rear? well the wife will be driving it a bit and I wanted something that did not change any road manners at all. And having a truetrac front and rear would in situations where all four wheels are on the ground, should give me up to 95% traction of a fully locked rear. I don't do competitions and I don't race up creek gullies for the fun of it, well not anymore.

So the cost was about $2,600 - still a lot less than a front end rebuild.

Really really happy with the service, cost and people.

And at their counter they have two examples of , I think, one normal diff and a locked diff that you can work by winding a wooden handle, could have obsessed me for hours, I told them they should manufacture them and sell them on ebay, they'd make a fortune, there's just something so unnatural about turning a wheel and watching gears rotate something at 90 degrees, fantastic.

I'm thinking of a LOKKA for the front of my Terracan ( $500 -$600 )

Don't know what other peoples thoughts on them are ,but seem to be a good price, simple and strong ??

A detroit truetrac is a mechanical LSD, doesn't full lock the two opposing wheels.

The Detroit Locker is a full locking locker, but I believe the series IV Detroit Locker is the Soflocker and it has almost no impact on on-road driving, the "almost" has effect on slippery surfaces, tight turns, use fo throttle, etc, I can't hope to impart hours of research in one post but there's a lot out there.

If I was the only one driving my ute and I was doing a lot more offroad I would have got the Soflocker in the rear.

Sure is, though they look a bit busier than that when they're open. They had a few decent 4WD's and sports cars in there too when I parked in. I gather the sports cars love getting LSD's and lockers to get going rather than spin wheels, or maybe its to spin both at once, i dunno.

and not its not a high tech place, but then neither are diffs ...

and don't get me started, yes I would have had a go myself but I don't even have axel stands let alone a garage ... yet.

Good to see someone that done his homework on Lockers, I had both ends of my Troopy fitted with the Detroit No-Spin's at Kedron and the Detroits are amazing, Of course there are some that think that a $5/600 locker is going to be as good and as strong as Detroit....as one of the above replies, all I can say is good luck....Good onya Porl.
