I would think that the first port of call would be the RACWA, they will advise accordingly. There can be an issue with car breakdowns (what to do with the van?).

We insured our first Poptop with RACQ in Queensland. Agreed value which they didn't automatically depreciate. Good rates. Late last year van got hail damage. Insurance write-off. Expected to get the run-around you hear of so often but RACQ handled the claim very quickly over the phone, and received the full agreed value (less 400 agreed excess) within a couple of days! When we got another van I expected to get slugged with a high rate having made a claim, but there was no excess, their answer being that it was an act of God. Couldn't recommend them highly enough.
From experience I would like to know
1. Is the value based on agreed value or market value (usually some very low figure picked by the insurance company)
2. Do they automatically depreciate the value each year. A well maintained van shouldn't depreciate, and may even increase in value after the first year or so.
3. Can you find anyone who has had to make a claim. Do they put you through the third degree and use every excuse to avoid making a payout.

Good luck and hope you have many happy years of caravanning.
Cheers
Alan

Hi Teabags - another thumbs up for RACQ.
We rolled our van on the Roper highway N.T.
RACQ had it inspected and claim settled for full amount (less excess) in about 3 weeks + excellent service. (Most of that 3 weeks was for the Darwin claims adjustor to get down to Mataranka to do the inspection.)

thankfully we haven't had a claim yet so can't tell you what they are like that way but with our car they were first rate.

There are two specialist firms offering insurance for vans.

Manufactured Homes Insurance Agency Pty Limited - http://www.mhia.com.au/

Caravan Insurance Leaders (CIL) - http://www.cilinsurances.com.au/

Your local state motoring association may be able to offer competitive insurance, I have also used GIO.

I am currently with MHIA as I have the policy bundled with the policy on our manufactured home. If you are a member of ACC then there are extra benefits plus a slightly better premium.
