Gday there

heading home from North Queensland around late October, just wondering if anyone has some advice on locations where I could have a chance at landing a barra, bass, jack, etc.

Won't have a boat in tow (can always hire one if they are available at the locations), and will likely just be staying in caravan parks on the way.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Lake Awoonga near Gladstone has freshwater Barra, heaps caught 1 metre plus in size. You are able to hire boats there as well if required or do a fishing charter.

Robbo,

Do about three to four months a year fishing the impoundments in Qld.

Flavour of the month are Awoonga near Gladstone, and Monduran near Gin Gin, boat hire is available at both dams. Best boat for hire are at Monduran.

Guides are available for both dams, But a good chat to Rob and Kelly at Lake Monduran will give you lots of information.

Go to AUSFISH and do a search on either lake, heaps of info and hints.

You need to have good gear, to land a good fish.

While I say that an old fellow at Awoonga a couple of years ago, caught a metre plus barra 30metres from ramp with a surf rod, 14lb mono line and a small sidecast.

What sort of gear do you have and can you utilise that, or do you want to know what you need.

Only been fishing for barra for a short time (30yrs) and still learning, my best so far just a 119.5cm at Lake Monduran.

I use spin gear, 50lb braid and 80lb leaders, with upgrade spilt rings and owner st66 4x hooks. But like I said, depends on what you currently have and is it suitable.

Neither dam is really suitable for bank fishing, and if you want to do that there are a lot more river systems suitable. These are big dams, and a bit of prior knowledge would help. Do you research, and you will have a great time.

Highly recommend

Many Thanks Kev, Darkie and Trev

well, I thought I had the right gear !

I'll just need to up the breaking strain on the braid, mono and upgrade the hooks and rings, then I should be right.

Yep, hate to get onto a good one then blow it because I wasn't fishing heavy enough.

Many Thanks

You can get away with lighter gear, if you catch the fish in the clear. Know what you are doing and are very capable.
However for the average fisherman upgrades are the best way to go. Lost lots of really good fish on gear that wasn't up to scratch.

Same as everything, learnt by my mistakes and boy have made a few over the years. All part of the learning curve

Good luck with you trip
