Rays weekend Trip

Well it was a blast, if not far can FREEZING! Im sure the snow stayed away as it was too cold.... Dry as a nuns, and dust wasnt really a problem..
The area out there in places is VERY GREEN.. you wouldnt know there was a drought...

Had several cars.
2 Holden Rodeo Utes
2 LWB GQ
1 SWB Mav
1 40 series (that was . close to rolling on a downhill - spare hit a tree to stop it rollin' I was told and its on video!!!)
1 Prado
1 GU 3.0

Lots of kids, and was a really good easy, but interesting area.. There were a few hills that gave some photos and entertainment, and lots of spent ammo layin round the dam area!

And Paper maps are still lots better than moving maps!

Now to sit by the letter box and wait to see if the rush to get there was worth it...

Someone mentioned Snow again soon?? Im in!

Anyway I agree paper maps only way to go. My navy (the boss) said it might be okay on the boat but in the MU no way.

Glad you enjoyed the camping! Given the weather I'm a bit disappointed that we didn't stay, but I had things to do at home. Was excellent to meet you, Jeff, Jim, Stuart, Ray, Luke and families. Your truck was just as I anticipated - just have to work on getting those diff locks!

Yes I did get the 40 series on video, and it's good to watch! I think a kink in the ground at the base of the tree was the ONLY thing that saved him. If you want that bit, I'm sure there's a way to get it to you.

We went back up that last hill on the way out, and were driving back down the main track to Avoca when just near the lookout we lost contact. The left rear wheel had come off! I don't know how, but it managed to stay with the vehicle and when we got back to them, the hub was sitting on the inside bottom of the rim. The attaching holes were elongated, so we jacked it up, put the spare on with nuts from the other wheels and gingerly drove home waiting for something to go wrong, which it did - speedo stopped working.

Summary of problems - slipping clutch, oil (lots) coming out of the transfer case, sloppy steering, wheels coming off, and speedo failure.

He's a keen young bloke, and he's only just got that machine, but he's not coming out with me again until he's got it fixed up a bit! The uncle in the passenger seat has had enough too!

Ray's laptop and GPS were excellent, but I think I'm with you and will stick to paper for now.Russell S

Great fun, great company, and great country!

The weather was awesome over the weekend - bit chilly at times, but lovely sunny days. The scenery is just fantastic from those ridge tracks - plenty of great photo opportunities. The driving was pretty easy for the most part. A couple of fun descents and rocky climbs, but mostly just cruising around on reasonably good tracks - so the Pyrenees is a great place to head for some relaxed easy driving :-)

Ahh....and the paper map V moving map debate Bruce? Just you wait until I learn to drive my new Meridian :-P

Nah - don't plan to do the laptop thing...just get the maps on the meridian - it's mounted right up fron at eye level so easy to see.

Must admit though - a very handy tool - but still no replacement for a paper map and compass at least as a backup.

Paper map batteries dont tend to run out :-)

Off to MElb big smoke tommorowfor a few baby things (small clothes )and the cheap seat install recommended from an earlier thread thanks to sydney gang,
Maybe have to call in to a 4by shop to check out the rear recovery hitch and a quick browse since the handbrake is still in hospital .
hmm maybe i need more money?
I will see some of you on the next snow trip hopefully in a few weeks?

Well I think it's all been said. Thanks for the weekend guys and gals, and not to forget the children who were all very well behaved. A special thanks to Russell for providing the chainsaw.

No need to be polarized when it comes to maps, use both methods to compliment each other and enjoy the best of both worlds. One thing for sure digital/moving maps is 100,000 times more fun than paper.

I have loaded a map showing the tracks travelled on both days to the location mentioned above. The tricky bit where the 40 did the slide is shown as a waypoint on old tiger cat track...37 06.752s 143 18.677e
Take some extra care there though there is a bypass.
Some steep sections on Lever, Radigan and Patrick tracks will require low range, rocky with good traction.Hooroo
