I run 265/75's and it actually made my speedo read correct against my GPS. It does effect the gearing and I only notice it when going up long 7 degree incline for about 5Km's where I have dropped about 5 KPh according to the speedo of course. Obviously better mileage on the tyres should result because of the increased rolling diameter. Don't put a lot of faith in tyre brands mentioned on any forum after all who's going to admit they made an incorrect choice when they have just forked out $1000 bucks or so. Just be carefull as the same tyre brand/pattern can be made in different countrys and exhibit different wear characteristics than others.
I like to look at where I normally drive and get a tyre to suit. ie if I am doing a lot of outback work I will see what the local station owners, outback hotel owners drive on. We have so little time to enjoy our land

I have had BFG AT for the last 60K km (on thios car). Thers's still a reasonable bit of rubber left.

Have not been into stony country, but they do most other general usage i want.

Depending on the original tyre fitment there may be some speedo error. (7% on RV & 3% on GXL).

MTR might be the go if you are after a mud tyre (without mods of large lift)

I ended up getting the Cooper 10 ply 265/75/r16's
Speedo is out about 3% and I have'nt noticed any change in the gearing
A mate got the 275/70/16's and they rub at the front mudflaps
