I have had several types of uhf radios in my 4x4s and have recently purchased and fitted a GME Electrophone TX3400 40ch transceiver with the remote mount facility. Fitting same to my GU Patrol which was an easy job not having to drill any holes etc. I also purchased a second unit, a Uniden UHO40XR Transciever Handheld which is powered by 3 AA alkaline rechargable batts which can be charged by an adapter from the vehicle or from a seperate charger. One can also use normal throw away alk aa batts. This unit is easy on batts but only has arange of approx 3klms. As i instruct in 4x4 with our club I find it extremely usefull. The added advantage is at camp when I do a little wander the others can contact me easily.
Both these units are reliable and neither are real costly. The first about $450 and the handheld about $100.
Cheers Rog.
