I am close to buying a Prado. Is there a problem taking a turbo on some of the isolated tracks such as The Birdsville Track, Innaminka, Maree etc.? Will the engine still work if the turbo packs it in?

Whatever you buy should be reliable enough to get through an outback trip.
If the Turbo goes generally you are stuffed i would think.

Others probably will differ.

Thanks.
It is not the thought of being stuck - that is in the hands of the gods and I know to carry spares and survival stuff etc. The key to the question is will I be able to drive out if the turbo fails.
I too, think if the turbo fails, the engine doesn't function.
I will be buying secondhand and will of course be servicing etc before I go.

You don't say if it is a new or second hand car. If new not a problem there are thousands of them out there so why would you be concerned. There are over 400 turbo diesels operating at Moomba alone, not Prado but so what.

If it is second hand then the safest bet is to ensure it has been serviced to the log book.

To the best of my knowledge there has never been a recall for either 90 or 120 Prado for turbo but if you are concerned get it checked over by your local automobile club as well

There was a recent thread about Prado heads failing.

That might be worth a read if you are worried about dodgy cars on isolated tracks.

Regardless of what you drive Turbo or non turbo you should be prepared to be stuck and isolated for a week in the outback. Basic supplies basic survival knowledge and some form of communications is essential for any outback trip.

Theres a heap of other parts that will let you down before a Toyota turbo does. The Prado turbos are reliable. And a turbo problem is unlikely to stop the motor, so you'd be worrying about nothing.

I think the turbo is a GARRET design ,made by Mitsubishi?

I would be more worried about the electronic brain on the fuel pump or the cyl head.
