Article Overview - The Tanami Track
The Tanami Track is essentially a great short-cut linking the Red Centre to the Kimberley. Although once a notorious 4WD track, it is now a graded dirt highway. View Full Article...
Rabbit Flat is open 7 days 12 months. Went through there last June, and the signs and maps still say Friday-Monday........go figure. Can't comment much on the bird sanctuary 'cept to say it is there, and is quite newly established. It's a great drive - loved it. Call into Yuendemu and visit the Aboriginal Art Gallery.......hard to find, no signs, and even the community store hadn't heard of it (What The ?) but worth it....... Not cheap - but quality.

Just really ,really, be sure that you DONT drive into Yuendemu on "royalty " day , no words allowed on this site can describe the scene that we witnessed on the 23rd of May last year.
Opinions are like the dollar coin , not worth much.
Facts however can save you lots of dollars.

Alan, despite reports saying Rabbit Flats is open 7 days a week in peak season, when we called in on a Wednesday last August, it was all locked up with no-on in sight, except a very old friendly dog. I understand it is open only if he chooses to open. What day of the week did you find it open?

Carry enough fuel to get through to Yuendumu or Halls Creek.
