It might pay to check that you can take a dog into a national park even if it stays in the car - I am pretty sure you cannot (at least in Vic).
I seem to recall seeing signs (or something on a website) stating that four legged creatures are NOT welcome, inside a car or otherwise.
I know for a fact that years ago friends had to leave their dog in their car just outside the entrance to Mt Buffalo while they all piled into our vehicle for the trip up the mountain.
