I use a solar still and it does not matter what water you use you can get clean drinking water from it.
It is an Aus invention from SA and was on the Inventors on the ABC.
Its just like carrying a spare solar panels with some extra bits.

Currently I use it to make drinking water from towns water where I live.

Dyson,
We use a two stage filter ceramic and activated carbon. Works like a bike pump and is very effective. Easy to clean and use. Yhere are a number around and it pays to buy the more expensive ones. Had for 5 years, it's been great.

Cheers

The latest version of this unit is the 'bicycle pump' style referred to in the above post - pumps 2 x the volume as my one does

Here you go

Katadyn Combi Plus
Water Purifier for water contaminated with chemicals (ie. tap water)
Standard unit functions similar to Pocket, but with carbon prefilter making it ideal for chemically contaminated water, and also this model has adaptor for travel in 3rd world countries, or for use on hotel room taps. This unit is made of poly material, while the Pocket (next model) is made of durable aluminium, handled with care, this unit can give many years of trouble free service. Invaluable for overseas trips, where we can now drink the local water without risk. Please note: In unusual situations, when additional viruses are present, it is necessary to supplement water with Micropur Forte before drinking.

Worked for us.

Cheers

Thank you one and all for your thoughts.
Ian, could you perhaps give me the address of where I might find this solar panel looking thing?
I have a son in Adfelaide who could maybe get me one if that is where they are made.
Thanks again

Have a look and see the price.
I bought four and two chaps backed out saying they wouldnt stop long enough in one spot to get the benefit of them.
email me when you have considered and I will drop $100 out of their price for one if you think its what you want.

Thanx again Ian.
I have yet to convince the man of the house that this would be a good investment. He seems to think that at 76 years old he wouldn't last long enough to get his money's worth.
Will be in touch.

I can relate to that sentiment but tell him your going to drink the water too and that halves the recovery time.
It makes a great cuppa and my doctor told me I should drink more fluids and after an argument about what we settled with a double scotch in a schooner glass topped up with clean fresh water which is highly medicinal and flushes the system.
So this cleans and pickles and extends the use by date.(LOL)

Dyson,
Any of the large hiking shops in town or even better on the web. It seems the prices are better than what I paid for mine which was around $289 from memory.

G'day dyson,
We also are looking for a bore water filtering solution. Heading inland again in a couple of weeks and thought I might try our BRITA household water filter this time. In case your not aware, its just a split cavity jug with a replacable cartridge.
It works well on Melbourne town supply when they occassionally get heavy handed with the chlorine. The cartridge of ion exchange resin & activated carbon is gravity fed so quite slow, but a few minutes will process a couple of litres for drinking.
Sorry I'm not much help to you, but someone may have already tried it on bore water and report in.
Cheers,
Paul
