My son has the weekend off footy so we've decided we're going fishing. Where are the fish biting at the moment???

sorry to say but i came to the conclusion it was a far better use of my time driving 6-7 hours to the Eyre Penninsula than casting a line 1 hour south of adelaide.

rapid bay is home to plenty of big fish but there very smart
never caught much at Myponga

same gos for blowhole creek

Waitpinga was sometimes worth a cast if your into beach fishing. Thats if you reckon you can get a bait in past the crabs. Mullet could be had along with the occasional salmon trout and small salmon

Just once we got onto a school of big salmon there

Forget vicor Harbour unless you heading for the pub

Only place we had any kind of consistent luck on the Yorke penninsula required a long walk. it was sighnposted formby bay and is the sthn end of the dusbowl beach. You park up the top of the cliffs and walk nth along the cliff tops and down onto the beach then along the beach for 500m -1km

Only had any luck at browns beach once when we got onto a big school of salmon trout

anyway besides the doom and gloom. Depending how old your son is you probabally just want a bit of a trip and sit on a jetty

as I said if you take him beach fishing again the Eyre Penninsula has some great beaches

as long as the weathers not unfishable places such as Dolphins beach (now renamed mt camel beach) between venus bay and talia used to be immpossable to not pull in plenty. gutters and hols are usually close to shore with mullet right in the shore break and tommies just behind them with salmon patrolling the holes a bit further out

Waitpinga at dawn or dusk for salmon of varying kinds up to about 4lb. If crabs are a problem (which I dont' think they are at the moment) try metal lures.

Anywhere on York peninsula may be OK but it is going to be a bit windy with west/south westerlies up to maybe 25 knots increasing the longer the weekend gets on, and rain is forcast:

Saturday : Wind: N/NW 10/20 knots, shifting W/SW 10/20 knots during the afternoon or evening.
Sunday : Wind: W/SW 10/20 knots, reaching SW 15/25 knots over Spencer Gulf from late morning.

Doesnt make for a great fishing weekend, especially seeing the boy had a bit of a bad experience last time.

Try maybe the Onkaparinga River using prawns for Bream, should get some even if undersized always with a chance of a trophy size. Take the waterproofs!

We were at Port Broughton a couple of weeks ago. There were plenty of good size yellow fin whiting being caught on the jetty in very shallow water. It is an ideal spot when the tide comes in over the mudflats. Some were even fishing right in front of the caravan park standing in 1-2 ft of water. The waterway is very sheltered there - not open gulf water.

The Broughton is a bit far for a day trip but a nice spot for a night or two. The caravan park is excellent.
