What to buy

I am considering buying a 4 wd to use as a daily comuter vehicle from Hill Top (near Mittagong) to Campbelltown i.e. 110k's of straight highway 5 days a week and then say two weekends a month I will be travelling with a horse float and mostly one horse though sometimes two - probably two horses will only be relatively short distances i.e. within 2 hours and when one horse might be to say Dubbo, Tamworth etc. for horse shows...3/4 times a year and local shows every second weekend to say Illawarra region, canberra, central coast.......but mainly it is a "passenger" vehicle except for towing ...............


I am (after some investigation) narrowing down my sights (budget of $15,000) to a hopefully dual fuel LPG/Petrol Nissan Patrol SWB 1990-1993... (or same in Ford Maverick)..........

Is it a great difference with LWB to economy??? (extra size is not necessary most of the time though would come in handy when towing showing for saddles etc.

What do you think?.....Any advice would be appreciated.....................

For that sort of money why not look at a 92 model Range Rover comfort power to pull both horses, and not to bad on fuel runing on the F-way

Julie you would have to look closely at a Landcruiser 80 Series Diesel (4.2 litre) and economical as you would not believe! Don't even think of a petrol job as it will cost the earth to refuel, You will be pressed to get one in your price range but you may get lucky.... Never buy a Pommie heap of ^%$#@ , you will lose you knickers on one of them!

There are some very neatHJ60 (diesel) Landcruisers around.They will do all you require and they are the right price.

I agree with Mal. If you look around, your budget should just about get you into a late (87-89) turbo-diesel 60 series. Will easily do all that towing with fair fuel consumption. Far less likely to go wrong than a Range Rover. Check out www.carsales.com.au to give you an idea of what is available around the country. Alternatively there are some good Patrols around.

Hi Julie
I suggest you check with RTA about towing regulations in NSW which i believe changed lately.
Your fully ladden trailer cannot be more then empty weight of tow vehicle.This makes a lot of sense for safety reasons.
Go for diesel Nissan GQ or Landcruiser 60 series
(If you get a turbo version it would be even better).

I am getting a lot of response about diesel options but wouldn't LPG still be more economical - I've now found a very well fitted out 92 Patrol with alarm, cruise control, fog lights, central locking, hayman reece adjustable tow bar and brakes, bull bar, swb, 5 speed auto with override, 170,000 in very good well serviced with receipts condition with duel fuel - i.e. Petrol and LPG (LPG fitted 4 years ago) for $15500.... 10 months rego - what do you think?

i.e. LPG as opposed to diesel??

Trucks use diesel and they do it for good reason - economy.

I have a petrol GQ Patrol and get 15 litres/100km on the highway without the trailer. I find it uses 2-3 litres more to two a 700kg Camper. A friends petrol GQ uses 20+ litres per 100km to tow a 15 foot caravan. Do the maths, but I think diesel is the most sensible option for towing.
