Pintle Coupling

G'day all, does anybody know if the 3 tonne pintle hook with ball is legal in Australia? It is listed in the Caravan Accessories book, but before I go and ask them direct, thought I would get some advice from here.Any body used/using one? Wishing to replace towbar with this, seems to be a good way of saving lots of weight. Any help greatly appreciated.

John I've got one on my cruiser and can't find anything wrong with em'. They are a lot more heavily constructed than a normal towball setup. Also gives a good place to snatch from.

As far as I know they are John, most small to medium trucks use them. You would have to ring up the appropriate road authority in your state and check (the bird on the phone probably won't know what your on about) or go to a road worthy place and ask.

I bought an ex army trailer once with the ring and pintle. Very strong construction but I found the clunking noise it made when travelling quite annoying.

Thanks for the reply, I thought that using the ring would be very noisy, but the one I am looking at has a ball also, so you can use that instead of the ring.

I've towed a Cub supamatic all over Oz using a pintle and ring coupling for over 20 years with absolutely no problems. Towed all sorts of stuff as well as snatching stuck vehicles off the back of the trailer.
You can get rid of the clunk by twisting a rubber plumbers ring (used to seal the joins on old earthenware pipes) into a figure 8 and placing it over the opening bit.
I have always had a swivelling ring on the trailer and a fixed pintle hook.
I have recently fitted the pintle with a ball built into it on the Humvee (needed a ball as well with no towbar) and it tends to wear the ring a bit due to the hardened ball I suspect but will probably stop when they match better.
I can send a pic of the ring if you want.
