motors usually run backwards when the power polarity is reversed. have you possibly put batterycables on the wrong way round?

Need more info if this is to be resolved

Q1 does it run backwards in both the in and out directions?

Q2 do both the solenoids operate individually when in and out is selected?

Q3 is the earth for the solenoids good and the one on the winch housing go to the battery?

Q4 does battery + go to armature and F/S1 , F/S2 go to the correct studs?(F/S1 and F/S2 not so critical-just forward will be reverse etc)

try them for starters

if it had burnt field wiring it probably has done some hard yards and cooked the field wiring, maybe pull it down and check or have it checked, may also have drum brake/clutch dragging due to rust or full of crud
