Submitted: Thursday, Jan 31, 2002 at 00:00

Gordon

I was wondering if the GEODATA RASTER 250K along with the OZI EXPLORER Software would be compatible with a GARMON GPS2 and Windows 95.I would like to be able to download tracks, waypoints, etc. from the GPS to the maps. Any help would be appreciated. Ta Gordon.

Yes - have a look at http://www.eureka4wd.com.au/Oziexplorer.htm for details on Garmin 2 setup. Also join the yahoo users group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/OziUsers-L - lots of help if you have problems.
I use a 486 laptop with Win 95 + Magellan - its a bit slow but does the job

Hi Gordon,
Yes it will all work ok, but you may want to think about the maps you use. the 250k maps are ok to get to the AREA you want but to nav 4WD you'll need 25K maps. Contouring is very important when your in the scrub, especially in the high country and 250k maps will not do.

Hi Gordon,
The 25K maps I'm referring to are digital, for OZI etc. 25K/50K/100K maps are available for any part of Aus. I have maps covering most of the vic 4WD country. Most digital formats will work with Ozi as you can import from pretty much any type of file. Or even make your own if you have the time with a scanner.

Just be carefull that you use the same Map datum system for your GPS and maps. ie AUS grid 84, or Aus grid 66 or the latest grid system. you can find this out on your map information, if you set the wrong one in your GPS you could be out by around 200m.

no problems there, ALL my maps use WGS84, and all the maps I have to recalibrate I do so under WGS84. I know some of you may use UTM and Aus grids, however WGS84 is the preffered grid, even in OZ. Easier to stick to a standard than muck around with conversions.

Theo - WGS84 is not a grid system but a datum. A lot of maps use UTM (a grid/coordinate system) and WGS84 (a datum). In the last two years GDA94 has been introduce and is now the 'preferred' datum (almost identical to WGS84 - but it is different). Most of the old maps I come across use datum’s such as AGD66 or ADG84 (these are not Aus grids as you mentioned but datum’s)- Aus maps generally using UTM or Transverse mercator projection based grids. Datum conversions are not a problem using modern GPS's and programs such as OziExplorer. You simply must be aware of what your GPS is set to, what your datum the map is your using and what you mapping program is currently set on. It can be confusing. Cheers Greg
