Fuel Consumption for GU Patrol 4.5L EFI

Submitted: Friday, Sep 05, 2003 at 01:23

Gunter

I recently bought a 99 GU Patrol 4.5L EFI (TB45E) and was wondering what fuel consumption others with the same vehicle are getting? Member - Melissa, your setup is fairly similar to our's, so I would be interested in your fuel stats -- if you don't mind.
I expected the car to be thirsty, but just want to get a comparison to see if more tuning can be done. So far my fuel consumption is around 22.3L/100km (4.5km/L) on the highway towing a Coromal Magnum 340 Rally XC camper trailer. Fuel consumption around town or off-road (both with no trailer) is at least 25L/100km depending on weight of my foot and/or terrian.

Gunter, you must have a heavy right foot. I get around 20l/100k towing a golf off road camper trailer and 18l/100 k without. Mine is manual, presently 265.75/16 AT/KO. These tyres also give a more accurate speedo reading.

Not sure if it all is due to my heavy right foot :-)
This is why I posted this message. All the extras on the vehicle may add the higher fuel consumption too. My rig is as follows:
Nissan Alloy Bullbar & Side Steps
Kaymar Dual Spare Wheel Carrier
6 x BFG AT 265/75/R16
50mm lift
Rancho suspension
ARB Air Diff Locker (front only)
Full length H/D Roof Rack with ladder and toolbox (front)
145L Long Range tank
Safari Snorkel
UniFilter (just installed -- fuel stats above are before Unifilter)
Rollerdraws

All this stuff is adding extra weight and I'm sure that the roof rack is not helping with aerodynamics either. Still, I think that the engine can possibly be tuned better ... Hopefully the Unifilter will have help a little.

Cheers,
Radar.

Hi Radar,
I also have 99 GU on gas and was wondering how you have found finding fuel around OZ especially out West here. Sticking to highways ive found is ok but going out of the way is a worry. I would like to do the CSR but fuel will be a worry. Any ideas ?
Cheers and cold beers

Hi Clarky,

Sorry I cant help with your question. Most of my 4bying is in and around Vic high country so Im never too far from fuel. You can get a bigger reserve petrol tank for GU but it obviously makes a huge difference in trip costs if running on petrol.

Cheers,
Radar.

I'm getting slightly less then that in my 98 Auto Ti.

15/16 highway, 21/22 city (no trailer, standard 265/75/16 tyres).

Hi Gunter,

Can't help with FC I'm afraid, mine is a 99 t/diesel.

I was wondering if you could provide some feedback on your suspension set-up (Rancho's and 50mm lift). What Rancho shocks do you have (RS5000 or RS9000X) and what springs? How do you find it performs for a) unloaded around town, b) offroad, no trailer, c) loaded, with trailer? What was the cost?

I am about to upgrade suspension and have been looking at Rancho, though not much experience with this. Posts suggest Koni's work well with GU. Appreciate any comments you have to offer.

Regards, Hugh

Hugh,

I originally was looking for a diesel GU Patrol too, but spotted this TB45E with more than $15K of extras already fitted at no extras cost (other than the higher fuel consumption off cause). Total Nissan in Cannington had this 99 TB45E for $32K and also a 99 TD42 for $34K. Both had similar KMs on the clock. The TD42 only had the standard Nissan Alloy Bullbar and a dual spare wheel carrier. All the extras already installed on the TB45E won it for me, but I did not expect the fuel consumption to be this high!

I have the Rancho RS5000 shocks fitted. I can't tell you much about the springs. The 50mm lift was apparently done by Opposite Lock.

All the gear was already fitted to the car when I bought it, so I can't make any before/after comparisons. I also have not driven any other GU Patrol to compare. In general I find that it handles/performs very well all round. Especially the offroad handling over rough stuff is very pleasing. Towing the Coromal Camper is a breeze (so far).

We are off to the Red Centre (Uluru, West & East MacDonnell ranges, etc.) this Sat. 13/09/03 for a 4 week trip. This will be a good test for the GU, Camper and me.
