Annie, can you elaborate in your question as to which particular parts of the "alpine highway" you mean and the time of year you are asking about. I have recently driven from Bright to Bairnsdale over Mt Hotham with the rig as pictured in the Rig Pic, but you needed to carry two sets of chains. I understand that some 4x4s would need to carry even two pair even for the car itself, and then another pair for the braked axle on the trailer.

Hi Annie,

The Alpine highway is general suitable for caravans; nevertheless it really does depend on the weather. If you are trying to go up to Hotham or Falls Creek and on the day you are travelling there is snow on the road than I would suggest not to go; however when the road is clear there should be no problem. Also be careful when you are going (which day in the week), usually now till the end of August is high season at the snow fields and therefore there is a lot of traffic (day trippers) on the road in particular till about 10.30 in the morning and then again from 3.30 to about 5.00 pm. Hope this helps a little.

Towed caravans many times up over Hotham but not in the winter. Done it in summer, spring and autumn with no problems and once or twice just a little snow at Hotham. Early Spring and late autumn may catch you out so check road conditions if that is the time you're going.

Yeah, outside of winter no trouble. Lots of rigs use the road.

During winter there is snow clearing but there can still be snow and ice on the road. Partic tricky are some steep exposed sections north of Hotham. At times the road is closed to everyone. Last season there was a major snowslip and it took half a day to clear it.

So all this is about the Great Alpine Rd.

If you are thinking about the Alpine Way that starts at Khancoban that's a different story altogether.
