Hi all, just purchased an Icom 400pro. Read lots about it seems to be what I need or can afford. problem is I can't get it to scan. The manual says there are 4 scan types and will scan tegged channels but they don't tell you how to tag the channels HELP.
Thanks in advance
Harry

What we do is earth the microphone hook internally in the microphone so it will scan no matter where the microphone is placed.
The scan function is a bit hard to use and I still get confused from time to time.
Out Icom IC-F2010 is much easier to use even that it has eight scan groups.
There is only two scan types, open and grouped.
Open will scan channel 1 to 40 and grouped will only scan channels you want it to scan.

Thanks for the advise.. I think that earth the mike holder is probably a good idea... scan scanning if you hear someone you can lift the mike and stop the scan.. is that how it works????? have worked out how to set the scan channels..
Progress aint it sweet
Cheers

I have one too and finally got it doing the clever things but hell it took me awhile - bit like programming a b^%$#@^&*y PC ! I use the selcall and CTCSS functions on occasions - the scanning works a treat too (especially that mode which 'sniffs' for repeaters). The manual is quite accurate in it's instructions but it assumes far too much prior knowledge for the owner, in my view. As mentiond above, you have to earth the mike clip and it will only scan (as supplied ex factory) with the mike in situ - a handy function - just means that the unit can resume scanning (if it was scanning) after you have finished chatting.
As for setting the channels into a scan - the instructions are in the book - choose the scan mode you want (open - group etc) - go to the particular channel - and nominate it to be scaned etc etc. Sounds easy but............. let us know if you are stuck.

***If you remove the front face of the unit, there is a small pad marked with word "HANG" if you
bridge the gap with a small dab of solder then the radio will scan without the need for earthing the mike.***
This is mind blowing to me why doesn't Icom make this a default option..I own 2x 41S Handhelds..Now one is put on the Hilux pull out cointray in the charger unit with rubber band holding it down (never has it fallen off during travels). Now i connect it to an external RFI antenna with a BNC Connection with the Icom Mike screwed in through the side of the unit and works a treat.
So why you have to solder etc is beyond me.Where only wanting it to scan like it should not ask it to perform miracles..

It can actually be a handy feature as the unit stops scanning while the mic is not in its cradle and restarts when it is replaced.
If the scan picks up a transmission that you wish to respond to or listen to then lift the mic and scan stops, talk or listen then replace when done, scan resumes. Other units I have used the scan restarts a few seconds after the last transmission and you had to find the stop scan button to chat and then manually start the scan on completion.
It would be nice if it was easy to switch off however as
mine is not earthed atm due to a mic relocation and it is a pain not being able to scan. Easy enough to do, just havent got around to it yet.
Cheers Jim
