Cape York 2010

Hi all. Just wondering where to start with regards to books/websites/maps ???
Planning on travelling up to the cape in a 100 series turbo diesel, in late September - early October next year.
There are so many books and so much info on the web that i am almost confused as to where i should start.
Should i buy books? Can anyone reccommend a good one?
Or should i just research the web sites.
I have a laptop and a Magellin GPS but do not have any software as of yet.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Buy Ron Moons Cape York Guide & read it cover to cover. It's the most comprehensive guide & includes maps, historical sites, phone contacts, camping suggestions, facillities & trek notes. A GPS can be handy occationally but is not really required for the cape as navigation generally is very straight forward.
After you have exhausted the info on ExOz you could also look atTHIS SITE.
Cheers Craig.......

I agree Ron Moons Book And a Hema Map of Cape York which I laminated was all that I Needed for my trip in 2004.My Suggestion would be to go to places on the western side on the way up and places on the eastern side on the way down. That way you are not wasting travelling time going across more than once.Absolute Minimum of a month to see most things but the longer the Better. Have a Fun trip.

G'day Nath,

We did the trip a couple of years ago and put up a web site - got a fair bit in it - track files, slideshow, fuel usage, recommendations (and what we wouldn't do again

Slideshow is definitely worth the download

Web site here
Cheers,

Sept - Oct will be too late with too little water about to have fun in the creek crossings. The whole peninsula will be dry and dusty as. Plus the air temp is warming up. Try the Cape York trek here and then check out every place on the Cape in Places. Half the OTT creeks are on it with pix and comments. Then hit google and you've got months worth of research...... I'm with the readers here regarding Ron and Viv Moons book on the Cape. Read it cover to cover before you go. They are shutting down over the next few weeks in preparation for the Wet season. This web site is awesome too and we printed out the info pages when we left.

We had to take advantage of Vic school hols so had no choice on timing and made the best of it. The Croc Tent was telling us tourism had already dropped off and they are closing soon. Still, there was water in all creek crossings and good fun. It was dusty up there a week ago as expected but so what? Close your windows and put the air cond on I recon. The problem for us was that it was getting hot and airless at night with the breeze comming on with sunrise and dropping off at night. Better tackle it next season, you'll have a ball.

P.S. do lots of maintenance before you head off!
