It annoys me that car dealers gouge us when it comes to buying spare parts.

After all, they know they have you by sensitive bits because you have a particular make of car, and mostly, only they stock the parts.

The blower control unit in my ten year old LX470 has failed. Its a small electronic box that converts the control voltage from the heater control unit to a strong current that the fan blower can use. It is also used in a wide range of Toyota vehicles.

Cost from Toyota $348!

The steering on the LX470 (read 100 series V8 with IFS) had become very vague and 'wandery'. Mr Toyota says new steering rack. At least he advised trying Pedders as the OEM unit was several grand plus labour! Luckily, my trusty mechanic was able to recondition the original unit for a total cost of $1200.

OEM Lexus wiper blades over $50!

Any other examples of ridiculous parts prices?

I always like to know whats in the box if it can be opened you would probably find dry solder joints or the main current switching transistor has gone open circuit, if they go short circuit the fan will run all the time. Ford fair lanes had a simmilar fan controler on there climate control it also cost a lot of dollars. The replacement transistor was about $30 trade price.

Yes I agree some parts are very highly priced for what they are. Maybe one thing to keep in mind though is that the dealer doesn't have the parts growing out the back. He had to buy them from Mr YOTA MISSAN or whatever and keep them on the shelf so that you could buy one when you needed, plus make a profit so that he could employ people and keep his doors open.

Just a thought

Cheers ob

How much would you charge for a part that you manufacture in 2009 and have to package it up and catalogue it and keep it in a secure area for maybe 5 years so that someone could get it immediately because they have a breakdown?
When someone wants that part, it has to be despatched ASAP and arrive undamaged so the customer is happy with the condition after storage for a long time amongst probably millions of other parts for all the different models that they make.
How much real estate and infrastructure has to be used to provide this service?
Someone's got to pay for it.

They had to order the part from Japan.
I realise there are legitimate overheads in running any sort of retail outlet, but when you pay about ten times what you might expect for simple electronic box you start to wonder. Frankly, the box has no more in it than a low voltage light transformer which sells for about $20.

Yep, know the feeling xxx, I had to buy the main electric window control for the drivers door for my 60.
That was 1997, and it was just under $500 then.
A bit of plastic and a few contacts and buttons.
Wish I had wind up windows.

Recently i got a quote from Toyota for some belts, filters and hoses.

Then i rang the local 4wd wreckers.

Quote came back at a total of $45 cheaper, and was told all Genuine Toyota parts. One guess where i got them from.

How does that work? How can another non Toyota shop sell Genuine Toyota parts cheaper then Toyota. You can guesss where i dont go anymore. Worst customer service, incompetent mechanics and absolute rip offs. Thats Broome Toyota for ya.

G'day Kroozer.

I know what you are saying and I'll try to explain it

There are companies here in Aus which import direct from Thai & Jap Toyota dealers. Toyota Aus is charged more from Toyota Japan than what these companies can buy from OS dealers.
We have companies selling genuine parts to the trade, for less than the dealers are paying for them, and still making money.
Toyota Aus can't stop it legally, & Toyota Japan doesn't seem to care as they sell the bits either way.
There is alo a problem with aftermarket parts in Genuine printed boxes.( Known as parrallell parts ). this is of course illegal and Toyota ( & other manufacturers ) do a lot to stop this sort of operation. But like SPAM, they just keep slipping through.
Disclamer....Yes I do work for a dealer

Yeah, well these parts were genuine australian parts, and came from a Perth Toyota dealer. They were in original wrapping and everything and came with receipt from the Perth caryard.

Also had to order some more jack handles and stuff and stupidly got them through Broome Toyota, took a week to geta] and i had to pay freight costs.. None in stock, thats ok. Wreckers got my parts up from Perth overnight. Freight free and still $45 cheaper. Explain that.

I had my GU 4.2 serviced last Tuesday.. its a 40,000k service, the biggest service, its for 280,000ks on the clock $1538.... it needed brake and clutch pedal rubbers, $72 for the pair.. i waited till this service to have the front discs skimmed as they have to remove to repack the bearings anyway, so skim the front discs, $180.. Then the ring me and tell me the power steering fluid was black and needed changing.... another $186.... It never ends, They did wash and vacuum for free LOL!! Anyway, thats its last Nissan service,, I will do it myself except for the tappets, thats too messy and i couldnt be bothered.. Ohhh ! Total bill was $2000 and they gave me a $100 discount.. I used the $100 on alcohol to drown my sorrows !!!! Michael

Yeh, been down that road!
The dealer said my back brakes were nearly worn out and they'd do a disc skim as well. Told them to hold it. I did a check, and by extrapolation, reckoned I still had another 20k left on the pads. I ended up changing them after about 25k, and then only coz I had the wheels off, so I reckoned it was about time. The discs were still perfect, and no skimming necessary.
At an earlier service, they reckoned the power steering fluid was very dark and needed changing (this was after about 60k). I argued that the service interval was a lot longer than this, and that my earlier GQ (Mav) went for 250k without a problem with discolouring of the fluid. Ah, yes, was the reply, but the GU is a much heavier vehicle and the power steering works much harder. I pointed out that the GU has an oil cooler that the Mav didn't have, therefore the fluid should have been under less duress, not more. Well, it's very dark, and it should be changed. They only charged me $80-odd. When I picked the vehicle up, they had a neat little Castrol advertising thingy on the counter with three vials of steering fluid, one very dark, one dark and one normal. Pointing to the dark vial, they reckoned that's what my fluid looked like. Obviously, this was an "extra service" push, promoted by Castrol. I've kept a sample of the fluid after they changed it, and 150k later, the colour still looks very similar in the reservoir to that of the sample.
Why do we get disillusioned with dealers?
cheers,
Gerry

Back in 1980 I started work at a company that made parts for the australian car industry. I remember someone I worked with asking a visitor from Ford or Holden "how come we sell these things to you for about $1.00, but it costs $40 to buy at the spare parts counter?" The guys reply was that the clear profit on each car they made was only about $20, spare parts was the main source of profit. As he said, if we made our profit up front, no one would be able to afford the cars in the first place.
