Could anyone give any feedback on travelling from Cameron Corner south to Silverton keeping as close as possible or practical to the border. I am thinking it might require permission (who?) but belonging to Exploroz there should be someone who would have been through this process before and can you share the info.

cheers

Never heard of anyone doing such trip. I imagine you would need permission from property owners and if on the NSW side, National Parks for some of the distance. As there are no obvious (defined) useable tracks evident I suggest you might like to re-think your journey. Looks like you might need to do some RESEARCH.

My Sister is in a group that wants to do this trip but I had doubts about access to said areas, so I said I'd ask. The Natmap Raster 2005 indicates that there are tracks to these parts but they are problably station tracks and I have just looked at the Hema GDT map and it has limited tracks marked on it.
Might suggest they look at going from Milparinka to Hawker Gate and down to Broughams Gate House as suggested by Vivien.
What do you guy's think.

Mal,

We did just that in 2007 and it was an interesting drive. You don't need permission to drive the roads that are near the fence but you're not allowed to drive on the track that runs along the actual fence. We came in from Milparinka but only because we wanted to visit Tibooburra. You can enter via Sturt National Park and then through Waka Station to Hewart Downs. Once there you head west to Hawker Gate. You follow the fence fairly closely until Brougham Gate and then the road moves away.

Hope that helps.

We did that trip in about 2001. There was a lot of water about.

We headed north out of Silverton and camped in magnificent dune country on the NSW side the first night.

We crossed the border several times. On the SA side we were blocked by the flooded Yandama Creek. We had to double back to the Hawker gate and headed north on the NSW side.

The track road to the north the Hawker gate went through some deep looking water crossings, so we exited to Milparinka.

Like most of these roads that are 'closed', they seem to get a hammering from the locals. Personally I'd have no qualms driving along the fence track, as I have done along sundry railway tracks etc that are supposedly closed to punters like us.

Done that trip several times, you need permition from the wild dog board to follow the fence, which i doubt you will get.
You will need to come in from Milparinka, across to the fence and the road actually follows part of the fence which is legal around Smithville Outpost, then down through Border Downs, Pine View, and work your way down to Silverton.
Good trip in dry weather, pretty easy going as i remember it.
